New Delhi: The central bank has said it will withdraw Rs 2,000 notes from circulation and people can exchange or deposit them in their bank accounts by September 30. The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) 19 regional offices and other banks will start taking Rs 2,000 notes for exchange with lower denomination one from May 23. They will remain legal tender, the RBI said. The RBI has told all banks The RBI started printing the Rs 2,000 note in November 2016 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrapped high-value Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes overnight. "The objective of introducing Rs 2,000 banknotes was met once banknotes in other denominations became available in adequate quantities. Therefore, printing of Rs 2000 banknotes was stopped in 2018- 19," the RBI said in a statement. "In order to ensure operational convenience and to avoid disruption of regular activities of bank branches, exchange of Rs 2,000 banknotes into banknotes of other denominations can be made up to a limit of Rs 20,000 at a time at any bank starting from May 23, 2023," the RBI said. The central bank said people can deposit or exchange for lower denomination notes till September 30 for up to Rs 20,000 at a time. ₹2000 Notes: भारतीय जनता पार्टी के एक सदस्य ने राज्यसभा में सोमवार को कहा कि 2000 रुपए के नोट का धड़ल्ले से गलत इस्तेमाल हो रहा है. इसका इस्तेमाल आपराधिक गतिविधियों और गैर-कानूनी व्यापार में हो रहा है. ऐसे में सरकार को इसे सिलसिलेवार तरीके से बंद कर देना चाहिए. बिहार के पूर्व उपमुख्यमंत्री और बीजेपी के सुशील कुमार मोदी ने उच्च सदन में शून्यकाल के दौरान यह मुद्दा उठाया. उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘बाजार में गुलाबी रंग के 2,000 रुपए के नोटों का दर्शन दुर्लभ हो गया है. एटीएम से नहीं निकल रहा है और अफवाह है कि यह अब वैध नहीं रहा.’’ उन्होंने सरकार से इस बारे में स्थिति स्पष्ट करने की मांग की. बीते महीने आरबीआई ने अचानक 2000 रुपये के नोट को चलन से बाहर करने का एलान किया था. 23 मई से 30 सितंबर 2023 तक सभी लोगों को 2000 का नोट बैंक में जमा करना है. वहीं, अब आरबीआई गवर्नर शक्तिकांत दास का कहना है कि 2000 रुपये के नोट के बैंकों में जमा होने से बड़ा फायदा होगा. उन्होंने बताया कि 2000 रुपये के 1.8 लाख रुपये के नोट सिस्टम में वापस आ गए है.
