It reminds us of the many sacrifices our freedom fighters made for the freedom movement and to get Independence from British rule. The country's history is written with many events of retaliation and uprisings led by the freedom fighters, eventually driving the Britishers out and forcing Lord Mountbatten, Viceroy of India at that time, to free the country from colonial rule on August 15, 1947. However, the day also marked the partition of British-ruled India into two countries - India and Pakistan. Independence Day 2022: What is Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav?

In his Mann ki Baat program last month, PM Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative was gaining momentum as a people's movement. In that program, he appealed to people to change their social media profiles to that of the tricolour between August 2-15. "August 2 is a special day... I have changed my social media DP and I urge you to do so," Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is based on five themes - Freedom, Ideas, Resolve, Actions and Achievements. Under the 'Freedom' theme, the government has focused on bringing out stories of unsung heroes who made sacrifices in India's freedom struggle. Some of the events organized under this theme include - Birsa Munda Jayanti, Shaheed Diwas, Declaration of Provisional Government of Free India by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, besides others. The much-celebrated, and, to an extent, politicized Har Ghar Tiranga campaign is also being carried out under this theme of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The 'Ideas' theme 'focuses on programmes and events inspired by ideas and ideals that have shaped the country and will guide India as the nation navigates through the 'period of Amrit Kaal', the next 25 years towards the 100th anniversary of India's independence. With events such as good governance week, Constitution Day and others, the 'Resolve' theme of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav aims to focus on collective resolve and determination to shape India's destiny by motivating individual citizens, civil society groups and organizations to play their role in nation-building.
