Assam University replaces Gown

The Assam University has replaced the traditional gown and caps with Indian khadi jacket and pagdi in its 20th convocation in a move to “replace the western culture from the Indian education system.” The Assam University vice chancellor said gowns are not suitable for Indian environment. (HT Photo) The central university in Silchar, established in 1994, is conducting a two-day convocation, which began on Satuday, where the students of the university campus and affiliated colleges are being awarded degrees. Vice chancellor, Professor Rajib Mohan Pant said that gowns and caps were adopted from western culture and the time has arrived to replace this from Indian education system. “Gowns are not suitable for Indian environment. We have such a rich culture to celebrate and we have taken a step this year. This will continue and we’ll try to include the art and craft of northeast India in our convocation attire in future,” he told HT. The vice chancellor of the Himachal Pradesh University, Professor Sat Prakash Bansal attended the convocation as the chief guest. He also delivered the Convocation Address on the opening day. OUR CORRESPONDENT TEZPUR: Assam Governor Presiding over the 20th convocation of the university in Tezpur on Friday, the Governor said that Tezpur University has been able to establish itself as an institution of repute within a relatively short span of time by making significant contributions in various academic fields. This is evident from the impactful scientific research and the works of community development carried out by its faculty and researchers in recent times. He further said that it is indeed satisfying to note that the faculty of Tezpur University are undertaking socially relevant researches in the areas like, removal of arsenic and fluoride in drinking water, solar and biogas as renewable energy sources, development of reductionist and holistic approaches for handling critical diseases, documentation of endangered languages, preservation and restoration of artifacts in Vaishnavite monasteries and digital archiving of cultural resources of the region. Stating an example, the Governor said that the university uses folklore for community messaging in collaboration with UNICEF and Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan in different schools of Assam. 20th convocation of Tezpur University held

HT Correspondent TEZPUR, Dec 30: Tezpur University organised 20th convocation on Friday where a total of 1362 students were conferred degrees and diplomas. Prof Sankar Kumar Pal, member, European Academy of Sciences & Arts, National Science Chair, Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) and president, Indian Statistical Institute was the chief guest, while Governor of Assam Prof Jagdish Mukhi presided over the convocation as the chancellor of the university. Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Prof Pal explained the emerging areas of Data Science Research. “We are amid what is popularly called the Information Revolution and are living in a so-called world of knowledge where a great volume of data is constantly being generated all around us,” Prof Pal said. He added that Data Science and Machine Intelligence is a cutting-edge research area and has enormous relevance in the context of national development. He, however, cautioned that doing Data Science Research is not straightforward as the large data are highly complex in nature.
