Mysuru Dasara: 60

Mysuru: Mysuru Dasara is famous across the world and people from across the globe throng the heritage city during this 10-day long festival. While the Dasara festival is popular for the distinct events that take place the entire month, there are a special set of fans who wait for the last day of the festival just to have a glimpse of the gorgeous elephants. Arjuna is one of the most popular elephants, however we have some bad news for his fans. Arjuna, who has been the lead elephant and the carrier of the Golden Howdah at the Mysuru Dasara from 2012 will be replaced by Abhimanyu, who is currently the strongest elephant in Mattigodu elephant camp. Arjuna had tuned 60 which is why 54-year-old Abhimanyu will take up the vital role this year. Also read: The report was confirmed by Assistant Conservator of Forests, Mysuru, Alexander, who oversees the Dasara elephants. While Abhimanyu will carry the 750-kg Golden Howdah in Mysuru Dasara procession this year, Vikram, Harsha, Vijaya, Cauvery, and Gopi from the Dubare elephant camp in Kushalnagar are selected to accompany Abhimanyu in the procession. Abhimanyu is the second elephant from the Mattigodu camp to carry the golden Howdah. Previously, Balarama from the same camp carried the howdah for several years in the past. Reportedly, Arjuna became the leading contender after being ahead of Balarama in the rehearsals of carrying the howdah, for almost five kilometres between Mysuru Palace and Bannimantap, by 45 minutes.

Elephant Abhimanyu and team head back to jungle camps

The 5 elephants including Abhimanyu that took part in Mysuru Dasara were accorded a warm send-off from the city to their respective jungle camps on Wednesday. Though 12 elephants take part in Dasara every year, their numbers were reduced as the festival itself was curtailed in view of the pandemic this year. A priest performed the customary puja for the collective welfare of the elephants and their safe return next year after which Abhimanyu and team were fed with sugarcane and jaggery. After the customary farewell, the elephants were herded to their designated truck which transported them to the jungle camps in Nagarahole. For Abhimanyu this was a special occasion as he carried the golden howdah with the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari for the first time, the mantle having passed on to him from his predecessor Arjuna. The four elephants that accompanied Abhimanyu included Vikrama, Gopi, Vijaya and Kaveri. However, the usual crowd of tourists and the local people who would congregate to see off the elephants every year, was missing this year. The imperatives of maintaining social distancing, the restriction on entry to the palace – where the elephants had camped for nearly a fortnight in the run up to Dasara – and the fear of the coronavirus, ensured that people stayed away from the event. The elephants were brought from Veeranahosahalli on the outskirts of Nagarahole to Mysuru on October 2. Senior Forest Department officials were present on the occasion. On Tuesday, the ma...

Mysuru: Arjuna, the howdah elephant, will be 60 next year and will be carrying the 750 kg golden howdah for the last time in 2020. Based on the court’s direction elephants aged 60 years and above are not supposed to carry heavy objects. As Arjuna will have to retire next year, 53-year-old Abhimanyu from the Muthigodu Elephant Camp, who has been part of the Dasara celebrations for over 18 years, is the front runner to replace him. Abhimanyu has served as a standby for Arjuna for the past couple of years. He is considered as the king of the forest, a troubleshooter and a sort of assault rifle all rolled into one by the forest officials. So far Abhimanyu has not only helped officials capture more than 200 elephants in the last nearly three decades, but has also carried Ambari during Srirangapatna Dasara. He is also considered to be an expert in capturing tigers. According to experts, including veterinarian Dr Nagaraj, Abhimanyu is capable of carrying the golden howdah. Dr Nagaraj told Newskarnataka, “As per the court order, no elephants over 60 years of age should carry excessive weight. That is why Arjuna will be carrying the golden howdah for the last time next year. We have Abhimanyu, who has an abundance of experience and has been Arjuna’s alternative for many years, will be replacing him. To take Abhimanyu’s place, we are grooming Dhananjaya, Gopi, Eshwara and Bhaskara.” “While we have Abhimanyu to replace Arjuna, we don’t have many options to replace him. That is why we...
