Coal smuggling case: Abhishek Banerjee dares Shah to arrest him; war of words break out between Trin

The top court had on May 17 granted relief to the TMC leader and his wife Rujira Banerjee by asking the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to examine them in its Kolkata office, instead of summoning them to Delhi, after giving a 24-hour advance notice. The bench had also stayed the Delhi High Court order which had dismissed the pleas filed by the TMC MP and his wife seeking quashing of summonses issued to them in a money-laundering probe. A bench headed by Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, at the outset, was urged by senior advocate Kapil Sibal that the leader has to go to Dubai for a medical procedure and the central probe agency has opposed it alleging he may not come back. "There is urgency. He wanted to go to Dubai for a medical procedure. We filed a petition in the (Calcutta) high court and there they opposed saying I will not return back," Sibal said. Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the ED, reminded the court that they have been granted the relief of being interrogated in Kolkata. "We will list this matter on Monday then. Whatever you want to file you either file or keep it ready with yourself," the CJI, who was on the bench with Justice S Ravindra Bhat, said. The court had, while allowing the couple to be questioned in Kolkata, observed it will not tolerate any kind of "interference or hooliganism" and said the state shall provide adequate police protection to ED officials there. The ED had told the top court, according to them, the TMC MP is a "potenti...

Trinamool's Abhishek Banerjee Writes To Probe Agency ED, Says Can't Appear Before It Due To Prior Engagement

Kolkata: Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday wrote to the Enforcement Directorate, which had summoned him for questioning on its ongoing investigation into a scam involving primary school jobs, expressing his inability to appear before it as he is preoccupied with an ongoing party programme. Last week, the central agency served a notice to Mr Banerjee, summoning him to appear before its officers on June 13. Abhishek Banerjee, considered number two in the party, said in the letter to ED that he is currently travelling as part of the "Trinamool e Nabojowar" (New wave in Trinamool) campaign besides being busy with the July 8 panchayat polls preparations. He said most of the documents sought by the ED are available with appropriate government authorities. "I am unable to appreciate the scope and purport of the summon under reference in as much as you have sought information/documents which do not have any connection with the public speech delivered by me on March 29," he said in the letter to the ED. The TMC national general secretary had last week declined to comply with the ED summon, citing preoccupation with political programmes. "... the information/documents requisitioned by your office in the summons under reference date to a decade, which are voluminous in nature, and I am in the process of collating such information/documents," he said. Mr Banerjee, however, sought a clarification from the ED on "the scope and purport of the ensuing investigation following ...

Addressing a public meeting, Banerjee said that in his last appearance before the ED, he had requested the officials not to summon him in the next few days on account of a scheduled TMC Yatra. Banerjee said that he is not blaming the ED officials for summoning him on that date since they are bound by duty. Banerjee says he is too busy at the moment He said that he is ready to send any document that the ED may ask for but he is too busy at the moment to be questioned for hours at their office. "I am not blaming the ED officials because they are only doing their duty. Their political bosses are getting sleepless nights owing to the huge success of the Nobojowar Yatra," Banerjee said. "Our program ends on June 16 and the panchayat elections have been announced, which will conclude on the 8th of July. They will question me for several hours and the net result would be zero. After the polls get over, if you summon me I will appear before you," the TMC general secretary added. Taking care to mention that he is ready to comply with the ED in...

“The agencies are not disclosing anything officially on matters related to Opposition leaders.... All that we are hearing are disclosures through selective leaks made to the media. As the contents of these leaks are strikingly similar to the allegations levelled by BJP leaders, the credibility of the agencies, especially the ED, is seriously eroded,” said a retired IPS officer. Actor Abhishek Banerjee says he got an opportunity to explore the romantic side of his personality in the upcoming Netflix anthology Ankahi Kahaniya, directed by filmmakers Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Abhishek Chaubey, and Saket Chaudhary, traces three different unheard and untold tales of love. The 36-year-old actor, best known for his performances in the horror comedy feature Stree and Amazon Prime Video web series Paatal Lok, said he was thrilled when the offer to play the lead in a film that revolves around the theme of love came his way. “I wanted to tap that side of romance. I also knew that, it’s going to be very difficult because probably from whatever training I’ve got and whatever kind of work I have done in my theatre days and later the kind of movies I was doing, I was nowhere close to playing a romantic hero,” the actor told PTI in a zoom interview. Banerjee, who features in Iyer Tiwari’s segment, said the anthology is his attempt to avoid being pigeonholed by producers. “I knew this is quite something out of the comfort zone. (I thought) this is going to be very interesting be...
