Droupadi Murmu took oath of office as the 15th President of India on Monday and created history by being the first tribal head of State and the second woman to occupy the country’s highest constitutional post. “That I attained the post of President is not my personal achievement, it is the achievement of every poor person in India. My election is a proof of the fact that the poor in India can have dreams and fulfil them too."said Madam President after being sworn in by Chief Justice of India (CJI) N V Ramana at Parliament’s Central Hall. She is required by the Constitution to act on the advice of the council of ministers led by the Prime Minister. But the President can ask the government to reconsider actions and offer advice. THE POLL PROCESS • The President is elected by members of the Electoral College comprising elected members of both Houses of Parliament, and elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of all states and the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry. • This means nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha or Legislative Assemblies of states are not part of the Electoral College.
