Back in the early 1990s a bunch of UK comic creators decided to have a go at doing their own comic so they could control the content and keep the profits. The comic was called Toxic and it was a good idea handled badly. One of the undisputed highlights was Accident Man, created by writers Pat Mills and Tony Skinner in tandem (visually brought to life by Martin Edmund and later Duke Mighten), and it introduced us to Mike Fallon, an assassin whose hits were made to look like accidents, hence the name. Full of violence and black humour, it was a cracking read while it lasted and it was obvious to all it would make a great film. Thing is, no one made it... Enter Scott Adkins. Adkins is a veteran Uk actor and action movie star. Not just a pretty face and a lethal right foot, he is a professional actor who is also a very good martial artist. Coinicidentally, he has been wanting to make an Accident Man movie since reading it as a kid. Not known for his screenwriting, this is his first attempt (with another newbie writer Stu Small), after putting up his own money to secure the rights. Comic book adaptation Accident Man is the story of Mike Fallon, an assassin who specializes in making his hits look like an accident. He likes his job, but when someone he cares for is taken from him, he begins to suspect the other assassins in his firm may be behind it. This takes him down a path of revenge as he follows the trail of the killer. Is Accident Man high art? Not even close. But, especially for a direct-to-video release, it’s an incredibly entertaining romp through a comic book world of hit men and assassins… and it’s the best remake of The Mechanic that isn’t a remake of The Mechanic. The cast of characters is one of the strong points of the film, led by Scott Adkins as Fallon. Accident Man is easily Adkins’ best film to date, allowing him to showcase his physical prowess as well as some really solid charisma. Adkins delivers some really great one-liners in this film, and showcases some pretty okay acting chops. Fallon isn’t a particularly good person, even before putting his employment aside. He’s selfish and rough around the edges, but when tragedy strikes it’s pretty easy to get behind his revenge mission, and Adkins does a solid job conveying this. Ray Stevenson is great in pretty much everything, and he shines as Big Ray, the owner of the hit man bar, Oasis. They give some good backstory between him and Fallon that really pays off in the third act. Stevenson also does a good job of balancing intensity and pure likability so damn well. Especially not any of the assassins from Accident Man (2018) seeing as how they all possess unique and brutal ways of killing people. There’s Jane the Ripper (Amy Johnston), who rips through people with her katana, Carnage Cliff (Ross O’Hennessy), who cleaves carnage with his mighty axe, and our hero, Mike (Scott Adkins), the Accident Man because he makes his kills look like accidents. Mike’s had a good run as a hitman. When you can kill people without creating any lasting questions or in-depth investigations, it makes it really easy to get away with murder. It’s when Mike starts breaking the hitman society rules, “Don’t get involved,” he gets into trouble. When Beth (Brooke Johnston) enters the picture it revitalizes a small section of the Accident Man’s cold, dead heart. They break up but then, when Beth’s environmental activism crosses the wrong people, she ends up getting her once warm, alive heart devitalized by one of Mike’s fellow assassins. He ditches his all-business approach to work and gets personal to find out who killed his ex-girlfriend so he can enact his no-so-accidental revenge.
