Djokovic, Medvedev, Jabeur and Sabalenka to play Adelaide International week 1

Eight of the world’s top 10 men and women will contest the first Adelaide International at The Drive from 1 to 8 January 2023. The combined WTA 500 and ATP 250 tennis tournament will feature 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, world No.6 Felix Auger-Aliassime, world No.7 Daniil Medvedev, world No.8 Andrey Rublev, world No.15 Jannik Sinner and two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray on the men’s side. Four of the world’s top 10 women will begin the new year in Adelaide, with world No.2 Ons Jabeur, world No.5 Aryna Sabalenka, world No.8 Daria Kasatkina and world No.9 Veronika Kudermetova all entered. The field will also feature former world No.1 and two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka, as well as 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and Grand Slam champions Bianca Andreescu and Jelena Ostapenko. Australia’s top-ranked man Nick Kyrgios and the world’s top four-ranked women Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, Jessica Pegula and Caroline Garcia are set to play Adelaide International 2 at The Drive from 9 to 14 January 2023. This is the first time Kyrgios will play an ATP 250 event in Adelaide, which is home to his good friend and doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinakis. Kyrgios joins the likes of world No.8 Andrey Rublev, Lorenzo Musetti, Dan Evans and Sebastian Korda in the men’s singles field. World No.22 and Wimbledon 2022 finalist Kyrgios is excited to play in South Australia next month. “I have heard good things about the tournament and the upgraded venue at The Drive,” Kyrgios said. “I am looking forward to playing in Adelaide. The Adelaide International 1 is the first regular ATP Tour event of 2023 and Djokovic and Medvedev have been drawn in the same half. World No 5 Djokovic will be the highest-ranked player in the tournament while Medvedev is the third seed for the ATP 250 event in South Australia. Novak Djokovic starts his tournament with a first-time meeting against World No 65 Frenchman Constant Lestienne. Djokovic or Letienne will go on to face the winner of the clash between Australian wild card Jordan Thompson or Frenchman Quentin Halys in the second round. The Serbian could meet seventh-seeded Canadian Denis Shapovalov, who opens against a qualifier, in the last eight if both men can win twice. Meanwhile Medvedev also faces a first-time meeting in the opening round as he prepares to face World No 45 Italian Lorenzo Sonego.
