Rashid Khan quits as Afghanistan Cricket captain as Taliban announces T20 World Cup squad

Afghanistan announced its squad for the upcoming T20 Cricket World Cup on Thursday, retaining Rashid Khan as the team's skipper. However, within minutes of the new Taliban-controlled Afghanistan Cricket Board's (ACB's) announcement, Rashid Khan declared that he was stepping down from his role as Skipper of the team. Highlighting that he deserved to be consulted on selection because he was captain, Rashid Khan issued a post on Twitter wherein he also added that his consent wasn't taken before being named in the team. He did highlight that it was always a proud feeling for him to represent his national side and captioned his post simply with a hands-joined emoji and the flag of the recently-deposed government of Afghanistan which has become a symbol against the Taliban. Rashid Khan is not believed to be in Afghanistan at this point in time. Rashid Khan wrote, 'As the captain and responsible person for the nation, I reserve the right to be part of the selection of the team. The selection committee and ACB has not obtained my consent for the team which has been announced by ACB media. Afghanistan T20I Captain: Spin great Rashid Khan has been named as the captain of the Afghanistan T20I cricket team by Afghanistan Cricket Board on December 28, 2022. Rashid Khan Named As Afghanistan T20I Captain Following the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Rashid was appointed as captain of the Afghanistan cricket team across all three formats. In December 2019, the Afghanistan Cricket Board reappointed Asghar Afghan as the national captain across all three formats. “We will try to stick together, will work hard to put things on the right track and bring pride and joy to our country and nation”. added Rashid Khan. Mr Mirwais Ashraf, the ACB Chairman, expressed his desire for the appointment of Rashid Khan as the captain of the Afghanistan National Team for the T20I format. “Rashid Khan is a massive name in Afghanistan Cricket. He has colossal experience of playing the format around the world which will help him take the team to a new level in the format”.
