Ahmedabad Rain Today: Hailstorm havoc, 72.6mm rain in 4 hours

The rain gods unleashed their wrath upon the city around 6pm on Sunday, driving motorists and pedestrians to seek shelter from the elements. Strong winds caused trees to topple and billboards to come crashing down while hailstones pounded the roads. The cyclonic circulation exerted such force that it froze water droplets, resulting in hailstorms across various areas, including SG Road and Ashram Road. By 10pm, Ahmedabad got 72.6mm of rain, the second highest single-day rainfall that the city has ever received in the month of May. Many residents were illprepared for the hailstorm, experiencing it for the first time. The storm’s fury extended beyond SG Road, reaching areas like Bopal and Rancharda, where it persisted for nearly half an hour. Hailstones, the size of large pebbles, rained down upon these regions. The intensity of the downpour led to temporary waterlogging in several western parts of the city in just two hours. The drizzle continued late into the night. Among the affected areas, Chandkheda received a staggering 76mm of rainfall from 6pm to 8pm, followed closely by Jodhpur with 75.5mm, Sarkhej with 62mm, Gota with 61mm, Chandlodia with 54.5mm, and Paldi and Usmanpura with 53mm each. Bodakdev and Bopal experienced 15 mm of rainfall alongside other regions. The maximum temperature plummeted to 39.9°C, 1.8 degrees below the normal average. According to the IMD forecast, the likelihood of rain or thunderstorms persists. Rain gods play spoilsport In just two hours, t...
