Air India flight crash: What is the difference between Air India and Air India Express?

While Air India is the flag carrier airline of India, Air India Express is a wholly owned subsidiary of the national carrier. Air India is headquartered at New Delhi and Air India Express is based out of Kochi in Kerala. More than 60 international destinations are served by Air India across four continents. Air India Express covers much smaller market. Air India Express came into existence on April 29 2005, with the launch of three flights that took off simultaneously from Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode. The main objective behind the launch of the airline was to provide convenient connectivity, to short-haul international routes, in the Middle East and Southeast Asia for the Indian expatriate community. "The airline (Air India Express) carries around 4.3 million passengers each year, and connects 140 city pairs with its cost effective and reliable flight services. Air India Express enjoys 6% market share in India - International travel market, and 13.3% market share in the India - Gulf travel market," the company's official website says. Air India Express fleet "Air India Express operates an impressive fleet of 25 Boeing 737- 800 Next Generation(NG) aircraft that support our low-cost structure. Our young and modern fleet comprises aircraft that are both economically and ecologically efficient. These aircraft allow for safe and comfortable flying, and are ideal for short/medium haul flights," the website also says. Also read: Also read:

EXPLAINED: The Air India

The Centre on Friday announced that Tata Sons has been selected as the winning bidder to take over state-run carrier Air India, marking the end of years of struggle to privatise the financially troubled airline. Tata Sons, the holding company for the autos-to-steel Tata conglomerate, bid 180 billion rupees ($2.40 billion) for the government’s 100 per cent stake in Air India, said Tuhin Kanta Pandey, Secretary to the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM). It is a journey marked by highs and lows as the airline that took India to the world (and brought the world to India) could find no takers for the longest time as it bled the national exchequer and ran into rough weather on everything from management to finances. WHY IS THE GOVT SELLING AIR INDIA? It was the third attempt to sell the national carrier and this time the Centre went all out, deciding to offload its entire stake lock, stock and barrel to the highest bidder. “We’ve decided that Air India will be 100 per cent disinvested. Choice isn’t between disinvestment and non-disinvestment, it’s between disinvestment and closing down," Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had said in March this year. The airline remains a “first-rate asset" but there is a need to wipe the “slate clean" since it is now buckling under a cumulative debt of Rs 60,000 crore, the minister had said. The story of AI’s sale has witnessed several twists and turns since such a move was first put together in 2000. “There is no choic...

privatisation: Air India privatisation saga: 'Time we stopped paying Rs 20 cr/day of taxpayers money to keep it flying'

"It won't be a very easy task there. Only advantage is they (new Air India owner) are paying the price which they think they can manage. They are not taking the excessive debt accumulated to fund years of losses. We are continuing it as an ongoing concern.... This process has also saved huge amount of taxpayers money going forward," Pandey told PTI. Earlier this month, the government had accepted an offer by Talace Pvt Ltd, a unit of the holding company of salt-to-software conglomerate As on August 31, Air India had a total debt of Rs 61,562 crore. About 75 per cent of this debt or Rs 46,262 crore will be transferred to a special purpose vehicle AIAHL before handing over the loss-making airline to the Tata Group. Of the 141 Air India aircraft that Tatas would get, 42 are leased planes while the remaining 99 are owned. Tata will also take over the capitalised lease liability on account of operating leases of Rs 9,185 crore. Besides, some of these 141 planes are grounded due to lack of engine and other maintenance. Also the obsolescence factor is there are many as not fuel efficient. "We want to finish the handover quickly, because we are paying Rs 20 cr /day to run the airline. The new owner will need to put in a lot of capital because they have to do capital expenditure to improve aircraft, refurbish and give new orders for obsolete aircraft. Only then they may be able to turnaround. Also conditions have been put that you cannot resize employees for 1 year, and thereafter ...
