Snehal Sengupta A museum on aviation history is almost ready to welcome visitors on board a decommissioned Tupolev Tu-142M maritime aircraft. It is parked on a two-acre plot adjacent to New Town police station and opposite the Tata Medical Centre and is likely to be inaugurated in the first week of January. The aircraft was operated by the Indian Navy’s air wing for reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare till 2017 before it was decommissioned. The museum, built at an estimated cost of around Rs 10 crore, is a KMDA initiative but will be run by Hidco. Visitors will be able to climb into the fuselage of the aircraft and have a look at the cockpit. “There will be dummy pilots, navigators, engineers as well as technicians in place. The cockpit controls have been retained as have some other equipment that have been deemed by the Indian Navy as fit to be viewed by the public,” said Hidco managing director Debashis Sen. A children’s park will be set up in the compound that will have rides themed around tanks and planes, Sen said. To try, test and feel the courage of the Indian Army and the power of our defence systems, there is no better place to visit than the newly opened Aircraft Museum in Kolkata, the first-ever aircraft museum in West Bengal and second in India, the other is located in Visakhapatnam. Inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on June 8, this museum is located at DJ Block, New Town, Action Area I, near New Town police station. While it offers free entry to students, others need pay a basic ticket fare of Rs 30. Once you enter through the lush lawns, you are greeted by a number of state-of-the art fighter aircraft, some of which are the best in the world. Take the Albatross/Tupolev Tu-142M, considered the largest and fastest turboprop aircraft in the world, weighing in at almost 110 tonne (110,000 kg). Originally developed in erstwhile Soviet Union, the Tupolev was manufactured by the Kuibyshev Aviation and Taganrog machinery plants. Other exhibits on display are mannequin pilots, various kinds of bombs used by the Air Force and Army, and machinery developed by the Indian Navy. Former aircraft engineer Satish Kumar Singh gave us a detailed tour of the museum. The TU142M aircraft being assembled Sudeshna Banerjee The flight, made in erstwhile Soviet Union, was inducted in the Indian Navy in 1988 at Dabolim, Goa and shifted to INS Rajali, the naval air station in Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu in 1992. It became the most formidable long range reconnaissance and antisubmarine aircraft of the Navy. The two-acre plot was chosen by Hidco as it wants to build zones of attraction at each of its legs of Biswa Bangla Gate. “This way, the whole area will become vibrant. You can see the naval museum from the viewing gallery of the gate. Once the museum is ready, the KMDA will hand the facility back to Hidco for operation as a tourist attraction,” said Hidco chairman cum managing director Debashis Sen. The aircraft, dismantled in parts, reached Calcutta in 16 trucks. “Its total weight is 110 tonnes. It took the heavier trucks 16 days to reach calcutta from Chennai while the lighter trucks came in seven days,” said Captain V.R.
