The Ellora-Ajanta International Festival (February 25-27, 2023) is a three-day event that will be held at Soneri Mahal in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. The festival celebrates the art and architecture of the Ellora and Ajanta caves, and features performances by national and international artists. The Ellora-Ajanta International Festival was last held in 2016. And after seven years, the district authorities have decided to bring back the festival with pomp and show. It’s been seven years since the last Ellora-Ajanta International Festival! Come February 25-27, 2023, the historic Soneri Mahal, a part of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University premises, will host the Ellora-Ajanta International Festival. It’s a great time to plan a trip to Aurangabad district. The Ellora-Ajanta International Festival was last held in 2016. And after seven years, the district authorities have decided to bring back the festival with pomp and show. Before the main cultural extravaganza, a pre-festival event called ‘Purvarang’ will also take place on February 12 at the Sant Eknath Rang Mandir in Osmanpura, Aurangabad. The pre-festival event will have Marathi musical performances by popular artists as its main attraction. On the first day, Mayur Vaidya and Mrunmayee Deshpande (Kathak), Prarthana Behre (Bharatnatyam) and Bhargavi Chirmule (Lavani) will perform. Later, Padmabhushan Ustad Rashid Khan (vocal), Mahesh Kale (vocal) Padmashree Vijay Ghate and Pt. Rakesh Chaurasia (Tabla and Flute Jugalmandi) will perform. On Sunday, Ustad Sujaat Hussain (Sitar) will perform along with Amit Chaube and Mukesh Jadhav (tabla), Padmashree Shivmani (drums), Ravi Chari (Sitar), Sangeet Haldipur (Piano), Selva Ganesh (Khanjira), Sheldon Desilva (Bass Guitar), Aditi Bhagwat (Kathak) will showcase their art. The Ellora-Ajanta International Festival will be held in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, from February 25 to 27, 2023 After a hiatus of seven years, culture aficionados can expect to see the culture showcase that the Ajanta and Ellora caves are famous for. Sited in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, the caves themselves are great heritage attractions. Dating back to 600 AD, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ellora (main image) cocoons 34 monasteries and temples dug into a high basalt cliff. Its sanctuaries are devoted to Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism, a fact that illustrates ancient India’s spirit of religious tolerance. Ajanta (below) is known for its 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments, which are considered prime examples of Buddhist religious art, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983. A celebration of the art and architecture of the Ajanta and Ellora caves, the three-day Ellora-Ajanta International Festival is scheduled from February 25 to 27, 2023. The Ajanta Caves are around 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which are date back from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 CE in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra state of India. The caves include paintings and rock-cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly expressive paintings that present emotion through gesture, pose and form. According to UNESCO, these are masterpieces of Buddhist religious art that influenced the Indian art that followed. The Ajanta Caves constitute ancient monasteries and worship-halls of different Buddhist traditions and carved into a 250-feet wall of rock. Textual records suggest that these caves served as a monsoon retreat for monks. Cave 2 is known for the paintings on the walls, ceilings and pillars. It is included in the list of UNESCO World heritage sites.
