Questions Raised In Nepal Over 'Akhand Bharat' Murals Placed In New Parliament Building

The murals in India's new Parliament building, which include depictions of certain Nepali places such as Kapilvastu, Biratnagar and Lumbini, have promoted a backlash in Nepal, with opposition leaders lodging a complaint against India. In response, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepal's Prime Minister, has agreed to take the matter up with Indian officials during his visit to India this week. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's RSS sister group has suggested the mural is produced in the cultural context of ancient Akhand Bharat, with no political connotations. "It has the potential of further aggravating the trust deficit already vitiating the bilateral relations between most of the immediate neighbours of India. It would be prudent for Indian political leadership to unravel and communicate in time the real intent and ramification of this mural episode," the former Maoist leader wrote on Twitter.
