By Suryagni Roy: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, inaugurated the Alipore Jail museum on Wednesday. While inaugurating the museum in Kolkata, she stated that there's a need for future generations to know about history, especially the contribution of freedom fighters in India's freedom struggle. She alleged that a concept is being pushed to change the history of the country for a 'political purpose'. "Why is the new concept coming? What is the concept? To Change the real world? To change the history and geography for a political purpose" said the West Bengal CM. She further stated that this is being done so that future generations won't come to know of India's history and there's an urgent need to preserve it. ALIPORE JAIL TURNS MUSEUM The 116-year-old Alipore jail has been turned into a museum and was inaugurated by CM Mamata Banerjee on September 21. The museum is now open to the general public at an entry fee of Rs 30. The light and sound show inside the museum will cost around Rs 100. The visitors will also get to see many historical attractions, such as cells in which Jawarharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose and other freedom fighters were kept during British rule, libraries and more.

The 116-year-old prison has had inmates such as Jawarharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose and other freedom fighters during British rule. Talking about this, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said, "Our freedom fighters have done a lot for us. Be it Pandit Nehru or Subash Chandra Bose, this building had them as its inmates and many more freedom fighters. We want our future generations to know our history. Yes, it can be said that it is our Puja gift."

Alipore Museum in Kolkata was earlier a central jail. I was apprehensive about visiting it as jails have a perception of being dreaded institutions. On top of it, they are known to be very dirty. It turned out to be a memorable visit and I intend to go there again. This museum seemed to exude a sense of pride. It is actually a very well-maintained museum. People also call it the Independence museum or Alipore Jail Museum. The pictures of this museum on its website are old and give a dismal view. It is located close to the famous Kali temple and is easily accessible by road. The work is executed by West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO) and Architect Partha Ranjan Das has led the conservation work. The museum, which brings to life notable moments from the freedom struggle linked to the prison and the revolutionaries who were lodged there, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee yesterday. Besides Netaji and Nehru, Aurobindo Ghosh, 'Deshbandhu' Chittaranjan Das, Kanailal Datta, Dinesh Gupta, and Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the first Chief Minister of West Bengal, were among those who were imprisoned in the jail. Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, then a young Indira Priyadarshini Nehru, had visited the jail to see her father during the freedom struggle. The prison cells that hosted Netaji, Nehru, and CR Das are part of the exhibition at the museum. A key attraction is a light and sound show that narrates incidents that took place inside the jail during the freedom struggle. The gallows, where revolutionaries like Kanailal Datta were hanged, is also on display.
