Alipore Jail Museum Set To Have An Archive On Nazrul, Lesser Known Revolutionaries

Kolkata: The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) is planning to set up an archive on Kazi Nazrul Islam and some lesser known revolutionaries, who had sacrificed their lives for the freedom of India, at the Alipore jail museum. The authorities have initiated the process to engage an agency for preparing a concept design of the archive, according to officials. A Hidco official said, “There has been a debate on whether Kazi Nazrul Islam had spent some days at Alipore jail or not. We have verified some historical documents and found that the poet had been lodged in the jail for some days like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose or Rishi Aurobindo. We are planning to display Nazrul Islam’s poems, books and other things at the archive.” The archive will also have information on the freedom fighters like The Alipore jail had served as the central correctional home till February 2019, after which all the jail inmates were shifted to Baruipur correctional home. The state government has set up a museum at the Alipore jail, which has attracted over two lakh visitors till date since its inauguration in September last year. The museum has been developed on the premises of the erstwhile Alipore Central Correctional Home on Judges Court Road. The correctional home was closed in 2019 and all the inmates were shifted to Baruipur Central Correctional Home. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee took the initiative to restore the correctional home buildings and set up a museum to celebrate the 75th year of Indian Independence. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had contested and won Kolkata's mayoral election in 1930 from a single-accommodation cell inside the Alipore Jail. It was here that Bose had also cooked for his mentor Chittaranjan Das when both were imprisoned at the same time. A young Indira Gandhi visited her father Jawaharlal Nehru, incarcerated in a cell in Alipore Jail. The cells and the buildings where Bose, Nehru and Das stayed were never used to keep other inmates post-Independence and were preserved as relics of history. The buildings of Alipore Jail have been restored to their pristine glory with 116-year-old records, thanks to the efforts of West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO). The museum is thrown open for general public. Partha Ranjan Das, an architect, has been in charge of the conservation efforts. The fact that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Rishi Aurobindo, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Bidhan Chandra Roy were among the prominent national figures who were arrested and kept here adds to the significance of the place. The museum tells moving stories of the Indian freedom fighters. The national historical landmark located in the heart of Kolkata was officially opened on September 21 by Chief Minister of Bengal Mamata Banerjee. Since September 23, it is accessible to the general public. The Alipore Jail Museum area consists of gallows (where many of our freedom fighters were hanged), a watch tower (from which the British jailors used to monitor the entire area), special cells (where the famous people were kept), general cells, a library, a seminar hall and a light and sound show (two shows are organised from 6:30 to 7:30 and 7:30 to 8:30), and exhibitions (one in Cell 5 and another in the Hospital Building).
