3.5 / 5 Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat’ has finally been released on Netflix after a not-so-memorable run at the ticket windows. Is the Alaya F-Karan Mehta starrer worth your time? Or can you skip it? Read the full movie review to find out. • • • • • Vicky Kaushal In A Still From 'Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat' Instagram Cast: Karan Mehta, Alaya F, Vicky Kaushal, Sapna Pabbi Available On: Netflix Duration: 2 Hours 01 Minute ‘Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat’: Story In London, a girl likes a boy, a little too much. And, in a parallel universe in Himachal, exists a boy that likes a girl. The two unrequited love stories, burdened by social status, caste and inequality are breathlessly, heading on towards each other. Will the two intensely one-sided loves find a matching partner? Will the two different stories meet at any point? Who is DJ Mohabbat and how is he connected to the entire scheme of things? Well, for all that you'll have to watch the movie. ‘Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat’: Performances Alaya F is definitely in top form again. Even though there is not too much of a difference in her look as the school girl and as the party girl, she somehow manages to make the two character’s approaches towards love, different. What is still disappointing is that Alaya’s characters don’t have the spine to stand up and take the weight of the entire story. The characters are very well written on paper but somehow miss the bull’s eye on the screen. Karan Mehta as a debuta...

‘Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat’: A Compelling Set

Anurag Kashyap’s Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat opens with two stories: one in Dalhousie, the other in London. The Dalhousie portion features a schoolgirl, Amrita (Alaya F), falling for a young directionless man, Yaqub (Karan Mehta). In London, a rich girl of Pakistani origin, Ayesha (Alaya F), is smitten with an upcoming DJ, Harmeet (Mehta), who rebuffs her. These segments, running parallelly, don’t have an immediate connection, except for one: DJ Mohabbat (Vicky Kaushal). Both Amrita and Harmeet are huge fans of the DJ who also runs a popular podcast on love. This fascinating conceit complicates the film’s genre and elicits several questions, as if transferring the curiosities of these lovers onto the audiences themselves. A ‘romantic drama’ that, like many modern relationships, shuns labels. The movie surprises with its micro designs, too. Devoid of initial backstories, the characters seem intriguing. Harmeet for instance, a straight-laced man, speaks shudh Hindi in London, replete with copious amounts of “ ji ”. Ayesha’s friend calls him a “ pindi ”. Amrita, on the other hand, appears remarkably carefree, slipping out of her house with Yaqub to attend a DJ Mohabbat concert in a different town. Yaqub remains as unbothered, even when Amrita’s family accuses him of perpetrating “love jihad” on news channels. The film sporadically cuts to DJ Mohabbat who reels off deep aphorisms, linking masculinity and vulnerability, love and obsession and self-validation. The other surpri...

‘Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat’ movie review: Anurag Kashyap’s romance

‘Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat’ movie review: Anurag Kashyap’s romance-drama is almost engaging, but not quite there The filmmaker’s latest attempt at reinvention is timely and well-meaning, but a scattered and almost laboured take on the perils of modern love across cultures February 04, 2023 01:39 pm | Updated 05:19 pm IST There comes a phase in the career of filmmakers when they test their relevance in the mindscape of young hearts. It seems director Anurag Kashyap is passing through that phase. Years after he broke conventions of love stories with Dev D, his latest attempt at reinvention is a timely and well-meaning but scattered and almost laboured take on the perils of modern love across cultures. Through two parallel narratives, where the same actors play the parts of almost lovers, the film addresses intolerance to relationships across faith and class, pernicious patriarchy, and the naivety of the internet generation. The entry of a caring but bigoted and homophobic elderly couple provides an unsettling sense of the generational gap. Add to it a layer of predatory homosexual behaviour and we have a series of strands that are disconcerting. The way Anurag attacks the idea of izzat is laudable and the dispensability of a Muslim in our society sends a chill down the spine. Having said that, Anurag could not turn genuine concerns into a compelling screenplay. He remains more of an observer than a participant and hence one could not emotionally integrate with the plight...
