By India Today News Desk: Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board - the authority responsible for the management of the Amarnath Yatra - has decided to ban food items from the menu that could be detrimental to the health of pilgrims. The pilgrims will not be able to have deep-fried, fast-food items and sweets like jalebi. The ban is likely to be implemented from July 1. Food items like halwa, jalebi, gulab jamun, ladoos, barfi and rasgullas have been banned from the food menu, along with crunchy snacks that are high in fat and salt. Pilgrims will not get popular items like Kurkure, namkeen mixtures, pakoras and samosas. Dishes like chhola-bhatura, pooris, pizza, burgers, dosas and chowmein will also be banned. A detailed food menu has been prepared for Langar organisations, food stalls, shops and other establishments which come up in the Yatra area to serve and sell food to the pilgrims and service providers. The idea is to keep pilgrims away from ‘unhealthy’ food items on the challenging 14-km long trek that passes through high altitudes and steep mountainous terrain, reported News18. Food items that have been approved are steamed rice and light food like roasted chana, poha, uthappam, idli, dal-roti and chocolate. Kheer, oats, dry fruits, honey and boiled sweets can be consumed during the pilgrimage.

Recently, the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board issued a health advisory outlining a set of food items that are prohibited during the pilgrimage. The prohibited foods consist of jalebi, halwa, pooris, and chole bhature. In addition, the advisory offers alternatives for langar organisations, shops, and stalls that cater to the dietary needs of pilgrims and service providers by providing and selling food. Authorities are expecting a minimum of 5,00,000 visitors to the Amarnath cave shrine this year. The pilgrimage to the sacred cave of Shri Amarnathji entails trekking at elevations reaching as high as 14,000 feet. By India Today Web Desk: Rescue operations for the 40 missing people went on overnight after a cloudburst on Friday brought on a flash flood near the holy cave shrine of Amarnath in Jammu and Kashmir. The resulting flood from the cloudburst killed at least 16 people and injured 105 more. Ever since the incident was first reported, officials have rescued as many as 15,000 stranded pilgrims and shifted them to the lower base camp of Panjtarni. Search operations went on without a break on Saturday amid fears that many are still trapped under the debris. Jammu and Kashmir’s Lt Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a meeting on Saturday with different agencies involved in Amarnath Yatra where it was decided that the yatra will remain suspended till rescue operations are over. Image Source : PTI Amarnath Yatra 2023: Amit Shah to hold review meeting Amarnath Yatra 2023: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday reviewed the preparations for the Amarnath Yatra at a high-level meeting in the national capital, directing to ensure adequate security arrangements to make a comfortable pilgrimage for the pilgrims. Pointing out that it is the priority of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government that Amarnath pilgrims should have "comfortable darshan and should not face any difficulty", Shah directed the officials concerned to make adequate security arrangements on the entire route of 62 days long Amarnath Yatra, which will commence on July 1 and culminate on August 31. Shah also stressed the need for smooth arrangements on the route "from the airport and railway station to the yatra base camp, and directed to provide air service from Srinagar and Jammu at night for the convenience of the pilgrims". The Home Minister later directed to ensure adequate stock of oxygen cylinders and their refilling and also asked for the availability of additional teams of doctors. You cannot have cold drinks, crunchy snacks, deep fried and fast food items, heavy sweets like jalebi and halwa, pooris and chhola bhaturas on the pilgrimage. In its health advisory for the annual yatra issued by the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board, the authority has banned a series of food items that could prove detrimental to the health of pilgrims on the arduous trek. A detailed food menu has been prepared that shall apply to Langar organisations, food stalls, shops and other establishments which come up in the yatra area to serve and sell food to the pilgrims and service providers. The idea is to keep pilgrims away from ‘unhealthy’ food items on the challenging 14-km long trek that passes through high altitudes and steep mountainous terrain.
