What Amlodipine is and what it is used for Amlodipine contains the active substance amlodipine which belongs to a group of medicines called calcium antagonists. Amlodipine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) or a certain type of chest pain called angina, a rare form of which is Prinzmetal’s or variant angina. In patients with high blood pressure this medicine works by relaxing blood vessels, so that blood passes through them more easily. In patients with angina Amlodipine works by improving blood supply to the heart muscle which then receives more oxygen and as a result chest pain is prevented. INTRODUCTION AMLOPIN 5MG TABLET contains Amlodipine which belongs to the group of medicines called Antihypertensive agents. It is used to treat hypertension and certain type of angina (chest pain) called as Prinzmetal or variant angina. Hypertension (also known as high blood pressure) is a medical condition in which the force of the blood exerted against the walls of the arteries remains very high, and as a result it may lead to severe damage to the blood vessels supplying vital organs, such as heart, kidney or brain. If left untreated, it may cause serious complications such as heart attack, heart failure, stroke or even blindness. Angina is a type of chest pain caused due to decreased blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart muscles. It is characterized by a sharp chest pain originating from the heart and radiating until left shoulder along with severe chest tightness or heaviness, and difficulty in breathing.
