Amrish Puri Biography

Amrish Lal Puri was an iconic Indian actor who appeared primarily in negative roles in Hindi movies. His most remembered roles are Mogambo in Mr India (1987) and Mola Ram in the Hollywood film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). He played character roles and was well-known as a villain. His striking bass voice, the ability to extend his eyes widely out of their eyelids during climactic scenes and outsize acting style made him a convincing villain in even the most melodramatic movies. Early life Puri was born in Nawanshahr to Lala Nihal Chand and Ved Kaur. He had four siblings, elder brothers Chaman Puri and Madan Puri (both of whom also became actors), younger brother Harish Puri and elder sister Chandrakanta. He graduated from B.M. Amrish failed his first screen test and had to find a job with LIC. Amrish Puri also acted in Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom. Meanwhile he started performing at the Prithvi Theatre, in plays written by Satyadev Dubey, eventually became well-known as stage actor and won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1979. Amrish Puri

It was unlike any ‘villain’ Hindi cinema had seen. A megalomaniac pompous braggart, given to referring to himself in the third person, sporting a blonde Duke wig, and an outlandish outfit in contrasts of black, shocking pink and striking golden yellow, mouthing what has become one of Hindi cinema’s memorable punchlines. The character is the closest Indian cinema has come to creating a comic-book villain in the school of Marvel/DC comics, much before the latter became a part of our cultural space. Salim-Javed, who had a knack for creating memorable villains — Gabbar Singh in Sholay and Shakal in Shaan — had created another for the ages. Mogambo. Like Gabbar’s ‘ Kitne aadmi thay’, ‘Mogambo khush hua’ too became a catchphrase. And in a strange twist, both characters became immensely popular with children. Amrish Puri was born in Naushahr in the Jalandhar district of Punjab in June 1932 into a family whose patriarch, quite common for the era, perceived cinema as the most degrading of vocations. In his teens at DAV College in Hoshiarpur, a young Amrish would occasionally play the flute at night sitting outside his hostel. The kindly principal of DAV College saw to it that Amrish became a member of the college’s recreation club, creating a pathway for the boy to perform at college functions. The young man could sketch well, was keen on photography and could imitate stars like Dilip Kumar. Circumstances prodded him to Simla and take admission in B.M. College where he participated...

When Kamal Haasan begged Dilip Kumar to act with him in Hindi version of 'Thevar Magan' – ThePrint – PTIFeed

Mumbai, May 28 (PTI) South film star Kamal Haasan may have worked with many great performers throughout his acting career, but one artist he desperately wanted to team up with was cinema icon Dilip Kumar. Haasan, a self confessed fan of Kumar, was keen to work alongside the late acting great in the Hindi remake of his film “Thevar Magan”. The film was later adapted by Priyadarshan in Hindi as “Virasat” with Anil Kapoor and Amrish Puri playing the father-son duo. Written and produced by Haasan and directed by Bharathan, the 1992 Tamil-language drama revolves around a respected village chieftain’s son (Haasan) who wants to open his own business, whereas his father (Sivaji Ganesan) wants him to return to his roots. “There’s one actor whom I miss and I really wanted to work with. I really held his hand and begged him but he had decided not to act, Dilip Kumar sahab. I wanted to make ‘Thevar Magan’ with him,” the actor said at the promotional event of his upcoming film “Vikram” here. “It didn’t happen so I gave it to another friend and he made it with Anil Kapoor sahab and Amrish Puri sahab,” Haasan said. “Vikram”, the much-anticipated Tamil drama directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, features Haasan alongside superstars Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi. The 67-year-old star may have missed the chance to share the screen space with Kumar but feels happy he was working in the Hindi cinema when the late actor was also active. “I never thought I would meet him. He came and shook hands a...
