For six consecutive days, authorities in India have been on a nationwide hunt for Amritpal Singh, a hardline Sikh leader from the northwestern state of Punjab who rose to prominence for supporting the Khalistan movement, which calls for the creation of an independent Sikh homeland. 30-year-old Singh has been on the run since March 18. PTI New Delhi, June A Delhi court on Monday refused to grant transit remand of two alleged operatives of the banned terrorist outfit ‘Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF)’ to the Punjab Police, saying the application was “belated”. Duty Metropolitan Magistrate Isha Singh noted the accused were to be produced before the court concerned in Punjab today on a production warrant it had issued earlier. The judge said the application was filed today at 11:55 AM and, even if the application to take the accused to Punjab was allowed, it would not be possible to produce them in the court before 5 PM. “If the accused had to be produced before the court concerned in Jagraon, Punjab, the investigating officer should have filed the application in time... This application is belated,” the judge said. The accused -- Amritpal Singh, alias Ammy, and Amrik Singh -- allegedly associated with Canada-based terrorist Arshdeep Dhalla, are currently in judicial custody in a case lodged by the NIA. The Punjab Police had sought their transit remand in a case of extortion registered at the Jagraon Sadar police station at Ludhiana. On 20 March 2023, Sandeep Singh was typing on his phone, “The blocking of accounts of Punjabi journalists Kamaldeep Brar and Gagandeep is highly regrettable.” Before the Punjab-based journalist could complete his tweet, his phone rang. “Your account has been withheld in India,” the caller told Sandeep. In response to legal requests from the Indian government, the microblogging site Twitter blocked over 120 accounts belonging to journalists, authors and politicians from Punjab – including Sandeep. This came amid a major crackdown against the Khalistan ideologue Amritpal Singh Sandhu, who gained popularity during the farmers’ protest movement that swept Punjab in 2020 and 2021. On 18 March, the police launched a massive manhunt to arrest Amritpal. Earlier, Amritpal had taken over Waris Punjab De, a Sikh separatist outfit founded by the actor turned activist Deep Sidhu, who died in early 2022. He also underwent a baptism ceremony upon returning to India from Dubai, where he earlier lived and worked, which garnered him attention.
