Fifty years of Anand: Making of a film that continues to inspire

By: Manju Chandran HOW A FRIENDSHIP LED HRISHIKESH MUKHERJEE TO MAKE A CLASSIC by ASJAD NAZIR ON MARCH 12, 1971 an unknown young man went to fill his car with petrol in the morning and was lost in the crowd. Later that day when he returned to the same Mumbai petrol station, those present began to recognise his face and it was his first taste of stardom. That 29-year-old was Amitabh Bachchan and those who recognised him had seen his film Anand, which had released earlier that day. The iconic classic headlined by then superstar Rajesh Khanna would go on to be regarded as one of the greatest Bollywood releases ever made and influence many movies that followed, including Shah Rukh Khan blockbuster Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003). As Anand celebrates its 50th anniversary on March 12, 2021, Eastern Eye looked back at the making of the multi award-winning movie and the ground-shaking impact it had. The legend of Anand began with an aspiring filmmaker named Hrishikesh Mukherjee, who had slowly risen up in the Bollywood ranks, working as a cameraman, editor and assistant director. He finally made his directorial debut with Musafir (1957), but it didn’t do the expected business despite having a strong star cast and could have signalled the end of his filmmaking career. Luckily, A-list star Raj Kapoor saw something in the commercial failure and got Mukherjee to direct his film Anari (1959), which would become a runaway success. Mukherjee never forgot what Raj Kapoor had done for him and they fo...

"Anand" is the story of a man dying of cancer, specifically lymphosarcoma of the intestines. Not being of Indian background, and watching the movie without subtitles, I was astonished to hear the only two words I understood in the movie as 'lymphosarcoma intestine'. Though I'm sure I missed a lot of the nuance in the story, it's more than evident that the title character, portrayed by Rajesh Khanna, had a zest for life and imparted that attitude to everyone he came in contact with. While those who get to know him lament and cry over his condition, Anand imparts an attitude that's inspiring and life affirming in the face of his impending mortality. Not only t...

'Anand' continues to inspire

Inspiration is the greatest influence on any life. While one loves many great films, it is Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s effervescent “Anand” which inspired me with its profound truths of life. Though “Anand” had great story, screenplay, lyrics and music , it is the film’s deeply spiritual message of humanism that resides within me since I first saw it at Mayur cinema in Jaipur on 14th March 1971. I must admit that the peculiar circumstances of that moment too helped me adopt “live-love-laugh” as my life mantras forever. It so happened that in a freak accident in July 1970, I lost the eyesight in both my eyes. For nearly six months, besides suffering the horrifying blackout as well as hundreds of painful injections in the eyes, I was engulfed by an abyss of silent misery behind the bandaged eyes. Subsequently, prayers of my familyled to a miraculous restoration of eye sight. So, when doctors announced a complete recovery, I merrily proceeded to witness “Anand” with my newly gained “insights”. Reliving the joy of witnessing a film, “Anand” also made me aware of how lucky I was to be alive and thriving. The story of the do-gooder, happiness spreading cancer patient made me realise life was a transient bubble that could go bust any moment. So for me, Rajesh Khanna spread not just cheer and smile on screen but also lit an everlasting flame of joy within my soul; his screen persona taught me “life should be big and not long” and that spreading of joy is greater than owning riches of t...
