Ante Sundaraniki Movie Review: Nani and Nazriya shine in this cute rom

Story: Childhood friends Sundar Prasad and Leela Thomas have fallen for each other. Only issue is, will their conservative families agree to their marriage? Review: If you’ve seen Mental Madhilo and Brochevarevarura, you kind of know what to expect from Vivek Athreya’s Ante Sundaraniki at this stage and he doesn’t disappoint. In a film filled with quirky yet relatable characters and no shortage of bad ideas or laughter, it’s hard to nit-pick when you walk out with a smile on your face. Sundar Prasad (Nani) is the only son (among many daughters) of a large, conservative, Brahmin family. With his hopes of being a child artiste in a Chiranjeevi film dashed, he suffocates under the numerous pujas and rituals his family makes him follow. It feels like almost every day when his father (Naresh) feels paranoid enough to find new ways to take away his freedom. His childhood friend Leela Thomas (Nazriya Nazim Fahadh) grows up in a similarly conservative family. While her parents don’t curb her dreams, her father (Azhagam Perumal) doesn’t feel comfortable enough in the presence of Hindus due to the kind of prejudice he faced. Fate brings these two together when they grow up and while they understand how important they are to each other over the course of a vacation, how will they convince their parents to agree to this union? Vivek Athreya takes his own sweet time setting up the characters of Sundar and Leela, apart from their families. Aruna Bhikshu plays Sundar’s grandma, a veena p...

Ante Sundaraniki movie review: Nani, Nazriya Fahadh share crackling chemistry in this hilarious rom

Premium Ante Sundaraniki movie review: Nani, Nazriya Fahadh share crackling chemistry in this hilarious rom-com Ante Sundaraniki review: Nani effortlessly fits into the role of a rebellious man, who comes up with masterful lies as easy as he breathes. Nazriya Fahadh’s screen presence adds a lot to the appeal of the movie. In Ante Sundaraniki, the hero Kasthuri Poorna Venkata Sesha Sai Pawana Rama Sundara Prasad aka Sundar’s superpower is his ability to talk people into the trickiest of situations. People just give into Sundar’s audacious demands despite their better judgment. Because halfway through the one-hour customary meeting with Sundar, his targets realise the truth that he won’t stop talking until they give him what he wants. In other words, Sundar badgers his targets into submission with his unceasing monologue. Sundar’s superpower is not something he inherited. It is something a person develops growing up in a household, which controls each breath he or she takes. A highly regimented approach to child parenting seems to be the easiest way to produce master liars. Also Read | Sundar comes from a highly conservative family. So much so that he’s not allowed to travel to the US because his family believes that allowing a man to cross the sea is a cardinal sin, something which would anger their gods. Their superficial beliefs make his growing-up years very painful. He’s constantly mocked for his funny, incomplete tonsured head at school. His father Sastri garu (played ...

'Ante Sundaraniki' Ending, Explained: Do Sundar And Leela’s Parents Accept Their Relationship?

“Ante Sundaraniki” is a masterclass in how to elevate a seemingly simple concept into what is probably the best love story of the year. We cannot believe that a movie like this did not work in the theaters. But luckily, it is getting its due on the OTT platforms. This is the story of Sundar and Leela, who are in love with each other and want to get married. But their families are against it, due to their different religious backgrounds. How they convince their parents for their relationship is the crux of the story. Sounds like something you may have seen before? Trust us when we say that is far from the truth. Because despite the masterful execution of their characters by the cast, especially Nani, the real hero is not even the story, but the screenplay and the editing. Let us see how this gem of a story unravels, giving us a cinematic experience to aspire to. Spoilers Ahead The Beginning Of Sundar And Leela’s Love Story “Ante Sundaraniki” starts with Sundar and Leela taking part in a school play that is quite successful with the audience. He is then approached by a man claiming to be an assistant film director, who promises him a role as a child artist in Chiranjeevi’s next film, set in America. Sundar’s father is a traditional man, and he claims that the sacred texts state that one must not cross the ocean. But Sunder’s mother comes up with a loophole: if you burn a blade of grass on your tongue, you can go abroad. His family reluctantly agrees to let him go for the mov...

‘Ante Sundaraniki’ movie review: Vivek Athreya’s humour

In a scene that appears towards the end of the Telugu Ante Sundaraniki, Sundar Prasad’s (Nani) boss Chandra Mohan (Harshavardhan) chides him for not revealing the good part first. He reasons that he would have heard the story in peace rather than getting stressed about the ups and downs. This character occasionally voices the thoughts of the audience. Can Sundar Prasad, who hails from an orthodox Hindu Brahmin family, and Leela Thomas (Nazriya Nazim), a Christian, convince their families and get married? That is just one part of the story because, in his third film, writer-director Vivek Athreya delivers a remarkable social commentary though it is cloaked in humour. Sundar and Leela’s story is complex, intertwined with what happens in their respective families. How they go about life is shaped by a sum of their experiences since childhood. Isn’t this the universal truth? The worlds of Sundar and Leela purportedly fit into a stereotype — avakaya and wine and cheese, if you will. They become conduits for Vivek Athreya to lay bare the prejudice and hypocrisy that masks the innate goodness in people. He does that with class and wit. Consider Sundar’s world. Since he is the only male heir, every decision is made with the advice of an astrologer. As a boy, he is given a ladybird bicycle to be on the safer side. His father (V. K. Naresh) will not have an adolescent Sundar cross the seas to go to the US; never mind if he misses out on the chance to act in a Chiranjeevi film. The m...

Ante Sundaraniki: Fabulous, Fun And Thought

There is a Telugu aphorism that goes like this: veyyi abbadaalu aadayina oka pelli cheyyamannaru (tell a thousand lies if you have to if it is to have a wedding). It's usually offered as justification when families hide things from one another in order to 'close the deal' on a wedding. Ante Sundaraniki (the thing about Sundar) inverts this standard operating procedure. In director-writer Vivek Athreya's film, instead of the families, it's the couple that dishes out lies in order to get everyone on board with their wedding. You hear the prevarication when Sundar's mother (played by the always wonderful Rohini Molleti) begins broaching a subject to his father — it could be anything from Sundar's dreams of becoming an actor to his prospective wedding — only for her voice to trail off. Or when Sundar stammers while replying to his father when asks who the "girl" is. They're all petrified of the patriarch's response (for a number of reasons). Athreya's film is about a series of cons that Sundar and Leela pull off to get their families to agree to their wedding. It's some of the most fun you will get out of a Telugu movie this year. Ante Sundaraniki delivers (in spurts) the pleasures of a traditional romcom, but adopts the storytelling devices of a heist, with many Ocean's Eleven -style, who-had-the-last-laugh rug pulls. Divided into chapters, the film's narrator is Sundar who recounts his story to different people in his life — think Rashomon , but spicier — and as it progresse...
