Apple tossed out a couple of surprise product announcements today. There are Apple tends to introduce its products during big publicized events that are teased weeks in advance. But in this case, CEO Tim Cook simply teased the news shortly before the official announcement, tweeting out some colorful digital doodles along with the hashtag #TakeNote, which apparently refers to the Pencil’s newly enhanced writing capabilities. Anyone who pairs a second-generation Apple Pencil with either of these new iPad Pro models will notice some new behaviors when scribbling on the tablet’s screen. A new Hover Mode allows the stylus to be detected by the iPad Pro while it’s nearly a half inch (12 millimeters) away from the screen. It’s a mode aimed at digital artists, as it could be used to fine-tune brush control; when a Pencil is hovering above the screen, the iPad shows a dot where the tip will touch down, giving users a chance to better line up their strokes. New Apple TV As for the new Apple TV, buyers will get to pick between two options: a model with only a Wi-Fi connection, and one with Wi-Fi and an Ethernet port. The Wi-Fi-only version comes with 64 GB of storage, while the Ethernet model gets 128 GB. The latest iPad Pro gains a new “hover” feature that detects the Apple Pencil when positioned slightly above the screen. Owners of Samsung’s stylus-compatible phones and tablets are already well familiar with this concept. Apple says hover lets users “see a preview of their mark before they make it.” This also allows users to sketch and illustrate with even greater precision, and makes everything users do with Apple Pencil even more effortless. For example, with Scribble, text fields automatically expand when the pencil gets near the screen, and handwriting converts to text even faster. Third-party apps can also take advantage of this new feature to enable entirely new marking and drawing experiences. Wireless networking has also been upgraded, as the iPad Pro now supports Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and “more 5G networks around the world.” Color options remain the same — just silver and space gray — and storage still tops out at 2TB. As before, the 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB configurations come with 8GB of RAM, while the 1TB and 2TB iPad Pros bump that up to 16GB.
