Beyond the Apple September 7 event — what’s next for Apple

Tim Cook will take to the stage of the Steve Jobs Theater tomorrow (September 7) to lead off the now-annual Apple is a big company, one with lots of different products receiving fairly regular updates. And as a maker of consumer electronics, Apple likes to get as many of those products onto retail shelves in time for holiday shopping. That means a lot of product announcements — more than can fit into any one event. And so, we've become accustomed to a fall with multiple product events from Apple and not just the lone September announcement. What Apple events to we already know about? As we've noted, there's already one Apple event on the schedule, and it's happening in less than a day's time. Apple's Far Out event begins at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on Wednesday, September 7 with Apple's first in-person event in quite some time. Obviously, September is one of the biggest months on the Apple calendar. At its You might expect that October would pale in comparison, but Apple still has a lot going on. There’s still one iPhone 14 to come, and potentially a handful of iPads, Macs, and possibly more. We expect some really important operating system updates as well–especially as the iPad and Mac are a little behind the iPhone in getting their big yearly update. M2 Mac mini: The Mac mini hasn’t been updated since the M1 chip was launched in 2020, and for some reason Apple still sells the Intel version as well. It’s expected that M2 MacBook Pros: The M2 iPad Pros: The Apps and software updates Everyone’s iPhone got a huge upgrade with iOS 16, which was accompanied by watchOS 9 and tvOS 16. But the iPadOS release, which typically comes at the same time, was skipped– ‌ tvOS 16.1: There’s not a lot of big new stuff in tvOS 16.1, other than maybe support for the Matter smart home standard, but it will update to keep on pace with iOS. iPadOS 16.1: This will be the first public release in the iPadOS 16 cycle–Apple is skipping iPadOS 16.0. It's getting colder in parts of the United States, which means pumpkin spice coffee, Saturday and Sunday football, and ... more new Apple goodies are about to arrive. Since 2010, Apple has held an October "special event" eight times, so we're likely to still get a few announcements from the company before the year closes out. A couple of obvious releases coming towards the end of the year, and in fact confirmed to be coming in October, are Besides the new software, new hardware could be arriving. At last year's "Unleashed" event on October 18, for example, the company introduced new color options for the HomePod mini, AirPods (3rd generation), and the 14-inch and (next-generation) MacBook Pro. Oh, we devoted Apple users sure do love Apple events, don’t we? And after a torturous 92 days after the last Apple event ( But Apple often has two events during the second half of the year. Assuming there’s a second event–and it seems practically certain that there will be this year–it’s usually Mac-focused and happens in October or early November. In the past, this event highlights updates to Mac models that are very popular with holiday shoppers. I’m always interested in Apple releases, and I look forward to the iPhone event just like anyone else. But this year, the iPhone event was kind of a yawner compared to what could happen in the Mac event later this fall. Even though 2022 is quickly coming to an end, there are still some other announcements we expect from Apple before then. While it’s unlikely that Apple will hold another special event in October, it can still make announcements via press releases. This month, we’re expecting updates to the MacBook Pro, new iPad hardware, and more. October 17, 2022 update: We’re still expecting new iPad models to be announced in just a matter of a few days. New MacBook Pro and Mac mini updates, however, could be a bit further off. Will there be an Apple event in October? Apple held a special event in September focused on the iPhone 14 lineup and the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Ultra, and Apple Watch SE. At the time, there was an expectation that Apple would also hold an event in October focused on the Mac and iPad. October events focused on the Mac and iPad have been scattered over the years. In October of 2021, for instance, the company held an event focused on the new MacBook Pro and their M1 Pro and M1 Max processors. In October 2020, there was an event focused on the iPhone 12, which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In November 2020, Apple held a Mac-focused event for the M1 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini. This year, however, Apple is reportedly not planning another event.
