Bursting with treasures — including manuscripts, thousands of woodblock editions, and an oracle bone bearing some of the oldest written Chinese script — the library is home to one of the largest collections of East Asian materials in North America. Williams collection in the 1920s, sustained the quality and distinction of the library at a time when UC Berkeley was almost alone among American campuses in offering a broad program in East Asian studies.
