An avalanche at Draupadi Ka Danda peak in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district trapped 29 mountaineers from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering on Tuesday, with a rescue operation already underway to bring them to safety, officials said. Eight mountaineers were rescued by their team members and efforts are on to bring the rest to safety, Uttarkashi Disaster Management Officer Devendra Patwal said. "If we had got even 10 seconds of time, we could have saved more lives..." said Rohit Bhatt, one of those who survived the massive avalanche that hit mount Draupadi ka Danda-II in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi on Tuesday morning. Today recuperating at the district hospital in Uttarkashi, Rohit spoke to Asianet Newsable over the phone and narrated the ordeal that he, along with 40 others, endured when the avalanche struck. DEHRADUN/UTTARKASHI: A 2.5 magnitude earthquake jolted Uttarkashi district on October 2, just two days before the deadly avalanche hit the group of trainees from Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) at Draupadi ka Danda. Sixteen bodies were recovered till Thursday afternoon while fifteen persons are still reported missing. Experienced mountaineers and locals are now saying that the quake, which had its epicentre not far away from the disaster site, might have triggered the avalanche on October 4 morning. According to National Centre of Seismology, the quake occurred at around 10:43 am on October 2 with its epicentre near Nald village in Bhatwari tehsil of Uttarkashi district. Significantly, the 25-km trek to Mount Draupadi ka Dana, which starts from Bhukki village, also lies in Bhatwari tehsil. "Sometimes, even small tremors can cause cracks in the glaciers and the upper layer of snow could dislodge immediately after a small amount of pressure is exerted on it. In the past, we have seen earthquake-triggered-avalanches like the 2015 avalanche around the Mt Everest base camp," said Love Raj Dharmshaktu, who has scaled Everest seven times.
