The emergence of Azam Khan, a true icon

Today marks the 12th death anniversary of the legendary Azam Khan, the pioneer of rock music in Bangladesh. With a discography of more than 20 albums, he was a constant advocate for peace and freedom, throughout his life. Azam Khan changed the course of our cultural history through his unconventional approach to music, his iconic style, and powerful and impactful lyrics. After the war, Bangladesh dived deep into the world of poverty, chaos and ultimate despair. Struggling to survive in a war-torn country, people were disappointed, disheartened and as a result, the young generation was being involved in various criminal activities. To inspire the disheartened people, Azam Khan started singing in concerts, delivering social and political messages, along with messages of hope. With his long hair, bell-bottom jeans, and powerful lyrics, Khan became immensely popular. Rock as a genre is known as a comprehensive philosophy and lifestyle statement, meant to inspire listeners to strive for freedom, rise against all injustices in the world. As in the US a decade prior, where rock music helped change cultural values, Bangladeshi rock 'n' roll—dominated by Azam Khan and his band Uchcharon—showed people that a different life was possible. UP court acquits Azam Khan in hate speech case

MEERUT A sessions court designated to try parliamentarians and legislators in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur on Wednesday acquitted Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan in a 2019 hate speech case, overturning the three-year sentence awarded to him by a lower court. Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan . (File Photo) Though the acquittal came as a relief for Khan, who has been elected to the Uttar Pradesh assembly from Rampur 10 times, it will not result in revocation of his suspension as an MLA due to his sentencing of two years in a 2008 case of assault on a public servant. On October 27 last year, an MP-MLA magistrate court awarded three-year jail term to Khan, the then SP legislator from Rampur Sadar seat, finding him guilty of hate speech in a 2019 case. The case pertains to Khan allegedly using harsh words against then Rampur district magistrate Aunjaneya Kumar Singh, chief minister Yogi Adityanath, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress candidate Sanjay Kapoor during a rally on April 7, 2019 in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections. Following the magistrate court’s order, Khan was disqualified as an MLA under Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, which states that anyone sentenced to imprisonment of two years or more shall be disqualified “from the date of such conviction” and remain disqualified for another six years after serving time in jail. He had challenged the verdict in the MP-MLA sessions court of Rampur. After hearing both sides, the MP-MLA sessions co...

Aatif Nawaz column: Azam Khan is one to watch in England v Pakistan series

I have always loved it. I have great affection for Pakistani culture. I love the food, the languages, my parents were born in Pakistan, but I am British. Yet I support the Pakistan cricket team, not because of a geographical loyalty or heritage, but because the style and excitement of this team has always clung to me. They have never been consistent but Pakistan have always had moments and stars that standout. I have been drawn in by the likes of Aamer Sohail, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar and Shahid Afridi. I'm now super excited to see the latest up-and-coming players in Pakistan's white-ball tour of England, which starts with the first one-day international on Thursday in Cardiff. Statisticians and journalists will be diverted, pouring themselves into England's fresh squad after their dramatic Covid-19 outbreak but, as exciting as it is to see Will Jacks, Tom Helm and seven other uncapped England players involved, there are a few Pakistan players to keep your eye on. Azam Khan - the 22-year-old son of former Pakistan wicketkeeper and captain Moin Khan - has been called up for the first time. • England v Pakistan fixtures and results He has an extraordinary story. First off he was born into Pakistan cricket royalty. His dad is a 1992 World Cup winner, who played 69 Tests between 1990 and 2004, while his uncle, Nadeem, also played two Tests for Pakistan. Moin captained Pakistan in 13 Tests between 1999 and 2001 But, even in his short career, Azam has had quite...
