It is operated as a civil enclave at AFS Bagdogra of the Indian Air Force. The airport also has regular helicopter flights to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Air traffic at Bagdogra crossed 1 million for the first time growing at 43.6% percent in 2014-15. This is one of the few airports in India with zero sales tax on aviation turbine fuel. The Airport is connected directly to Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Guwahati, during tourist season airlines also arrange direct flights to Bagdogra from other major cities such as Ahmedabad and Others. The Airport and the problems it faces Bagdogra Airport is spread over a relatively small area of about 14 acres. Although traffic has grown tremendously over the years and it continues to be one of the fastest-growing airports in the country, the infrastructure here has not kept up with the growing number of tourists.
