The history of the American Bandogge is fascinating. These dogs are believed to have origins as far back as 13th century England. The term Bandog comes from the Saxon word Banda which refers to a guard dog that is chained by day, and released to protect at night. These imposing looking dogs can often be referred to as Pitbulls, but are they? Is the American Bandogge a Pitbull? As a whole the American Bandogge is not considered a Pitbull. Though the modern American Bandogge is believed to have been bred with Pitbulls and Mastiff dogs, there is no breed standard established to define the Bandog as a Pitbull. Though the American Bandogge does share similar physical characteristics as the American Pitbull Terrier, the two dogs are not the same breed. Bandogs have no concise breed standard and as a result have been mixed with a variety of Bully breed and Mastiff type dogs for decades, and even centuries. Both Bullmastiff and Bandog are originated from United Kingdom. Bullmastiff may grow 8 cm / 3 inches shorter than Bandog. Both Bullmastiff and Bandog are having almost same weight. Both Bullmastiff and Bandog has same life span. Bullmastiff may have more litter size than Bandog. Bullmastiff requires Low maintenance. But Bandog requires Moderate maintenance The Old English Mastiff as well as the Bulldog are the breeds behind the Bull Mastiff. The Bullmastiff was originally developed in England around the 1860’s. Gamekeepers in England wanted a large, brave, robust dog which could help with keeping poachers away from their large estates which kept game. As these large estates dwindled, so did the need for the services of the Bullmastiff and later they were simply bred to be family companions. As more Old English Mastiffs were bred, the dog became lighter, so that light tan or fawn became the preferred color. The breed was officially recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1924, and the American Kennel Club in 1933. The original Bandogs were bred for guarding and protecting. It is believed that the dogs were developed from eastern shepherds, the American Pit Bull Terrier and Mastiffs and crossed with western Bullenbeissers and hounds, and it is thought that the hybrid breed came into existence way back, around 1250-1300 in Middle England.
