Bangalore: Traffic violators to get booked under IPC

Violating traffic laws in Bangalore could get you in some serious trouble, as the police have now decided to take a tougher stance on traffic violations. The Bangalore traffic police plan to book violators under a more stringent IPC section. They will be targeting three major offences - driving or riding against the flow of traffic, riding on the footpath and wrongful parking. According to a media report, violators will be booked under Section 283 of the IPC, which deals with danger or obstruction in a public way or line of navigation. It has a provision for the cops to seize the vehicle, which can only be released through a court. Since January, the police have registered 4,200 cases under this section. It is said that impounding the vehicle and having to appear in court to secure its release serves as a better deterrent than a fine. Source:

Major changes in vehicular movement near Hebbal flyover

In a bid to ease the traffic bottleneck near Hebbal flyover, the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) have implemented major changes in vehicular movement. Henceforth, vehicles coming from Yelahanka side on the service road of Ballari Road cannot get on to Hebbal flyover like before. They need to take a left turn and use the loop ramp to get onto the flyover towards the city. This, officials said, will ease the chaos created by traffic from the airport expressway and service road merging at the flyover up ramp. Vehicles heading to Kempapura have also been directed to take a left turn at Vidyashilp/Yelahanka bypass. The changes have drawn criticism from residents of the area. “The traffic flow changes have been made without understanding the width of the roads. The service road is four lanes wide, while the road leading to the loop ramp is only two lanes wide, causing a new bottleneck. People complain that most footpaths are dug up for various infrastructure projects, but not restored once the projects are completed. | Video Credit: Adithi Holla & Samhitha B S While this will push vehicles from the airport expressway on Hebbal flyover for a short distance, they will again get stuck at the down ramp since it is again only two lanes wide. What is urgently needed is an additional lane added to the Hebbal flyover,” said Sanjeev V. Dyamannanavar, a resident of the area and transport activist. Bengaluru’s traffic jam scene gets spicier on Monday morning

Express News Service Traffic snarls at the Hebbal flyover area, notorious for massive traffic jams, intensified during peak hours on Monday morning following a decision by the Traffic Police to barricade a service road here. The road connects with the Ballari Main Road leading to the airport and residents of numerous surrounding areas used it to enter the City from here or reached their areas through a shortened route. The Chief Minister's Office had a week ago directed the district administration to take steps to reduce traffic congestion at 10 key spots in Bengaluru including Hebbal. A long queue extending up to 2 km cropped up on the service road, that lies in front of Esteem Mall and Columbia Asia Hospital, around 8 am today. A top traffic cop told TNIE they were trying it out on an experimental basis from Monday on the orders of the Police Commissioner. “We will see for two or three days how it would work out,” he said. He conceded there was some confusion in the morning due to the sudden introduction and traffic cops were at the spot to guide public. “We will tell BBMP to put up signboards immediately so that public know they need to use the flyover from tomorrow,” the cop said. Residents of Kodigehalli, Sahkar Nagar, Jakkur, Amruthahalli and Yelahanka New Town among others use this service road to enter the City. They will now have to take a longish route of going below the Hebbal flyover, taking a left turn and using a loop on the flyover to enter the City. The she...
