25 best movies of 2022 streaming on Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu and more

Aside from the Hollywood blockbusters, the communal fun of RRR and feels of Everything Everywhere All At Once got people to try out independent cinema again. Oh, and a star was born portraying The King himself, Elvis. Streaming didn't suddenly stop, either. On Disney Plus, we got Turning Red, a coming-of-age movie so great that we can't stop rewatching it. Also, Hulu impressed with a trip to Fire Island. Maybe it's recency bias, maybe it's the power of a single, memorable performance, but Pearl makes it to our list when it's predecessor X does not. Ti West's modern horror movies, which tell the tales of things gone wrong on a farm in the boonies, got a lot more attention than they were budgeted for. Mia Goth's performance as the titular Pearl, though, is riveting enough that it makes us feel okay about using 'unhinged,' one of the words that's definitely gotten over-used in 2022. Pearl is a simple farm girl, whose life veered off the road into isolation due to the 1918 influenza pandemic, which has made her mother extra-precautious about Pearl's ailing father. And it's all warped Pearl's mind so much that she puts too much of her hopes, wants and dreams into a talent competition that could get her out of this town. – Henry T. Casey Buy or rent on Amazon , Apple and other on demand services 24. Smile Outside of the financial success of Top Gun: Maverick, 2022 was the year of the horror movie. And if Pearl's dalliances in the genre were subtle, Smile's were anything but. Rem...

Let me level with you: Making a list of the best movies of the year is impossible. It’s highly personal. It’s trying to rank art, which is absurd. There are thousands of movies, and I can only reasonably see several hundred, and this is my job. It’s a task nobody should really undertake. But undertake it we do, because even a list that’s taste-driven and necessarily partial can be a fun exercise in reading the culture. What did this year in movies serve up? Lots of satire, lots of horror, lots of examinations of the past to see what it teaches us about the present and the future. Watching the year’s best movies (according to me) is one way to see the rich variety of vital work still being done on screens big and small ones, and it reminds us that cinema remains a vital art, even in 2022. So without further ado, here are the 25 best films of 2022, how and why you should watch them, and a list of honorable mentions to check out, too. 25. Jackass Forever You want me to explain the inclusion of Jackass Forever on this list? Well, have you seen it? Jackass Forever is the first of the films to add a new cast, because Johnny Knoxville and h...

The 29 Best Movies of 2022

Have we finally entered a post-pandemic moment in our collective movie-going history? While the studios certainly hoped so, the box office tells a different story, with some of 2022's biggest productions barely scraping by. But let that be no reflection of the eclectic, innovative, and surprising offings that came not only out of Hollywood but also Ireland, Korea, Iran and elsewhere this year. And with the ever expanding ecosystem of streaming platforms, there are more ways to watch than ever before. Here, we present the best films of 2022—roughly in order of the date they came out this year—from block-busting action flicks to cozy dramas. Go forth, and settle in for some good old-fashioned movie magic…no matter how you watch it. The Worst Person in the World Joachim Trier’s latest is a romantic-comedy-drama with the stunning Renate Reinsve (she took home the best actress award at Cannes) starring as Julie, a somewhat directionless young woman involved in a relationship with a more ambitious and directed man 15 years her senior. The setup becomes more complicated when she meets and begins to fall for a man closer to her age. The self-described “European art-house guy” director told the Los Angeles Times that he “went out on a limb” with this surprisingly romantic film. —Chloe Schama The opening night film at SXSW, A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once stars Michelle Yeoh as a Chinese American woman who sets off on a mundane task—finishing her taxes—and ends up…traversing...

The 15 Best Movies of 2022—and Where to Watch Them

While 2021 was largely defined by its proximity to the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, when worldwide lockdowns and cinema closings forced moviegoers to establish new viewing habits, 2022 seemed to be about getting back to “business as usual.” Which, itself, is a constantly evolving concept. But the past 12 months have provided all the benchmarks people have come to expect from any single year of moviedom: massive blockbusters (hello, Maverick), surprising flops (sorry, Lightyear), unexpected hits ( Sonic the Hedgehog 2?!), and a parade of superheroes. It all added up to a really solid year of entertainment, with fantastic films being made in countless genres ( Every so often a movie comes along where it feels like the cast and crew are having as much fun making the film as you are watching it. That would be Glass Onion. More specifically: Daniel Craig seems to be soaking up every second of the Detective Benoit Blanc Experience (which could have something to do with having had one hand attached to James Bond’s martini glass for the past 15 years). Rian Johnson is back in the director’s chair with a script he wrote for the second installment of this surprise franchise. The action has moved to Greece, on a private island belonging to brash tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton, who seems equally game to play). A “Murder Mystery” is on the official itinerary, but it is interrupted by the one unfolding in real life. Yet again, everyone’s a suspect. Yet again, it’s up to B...
