How to See Mahakaleshwar Temple's Bhasm Aarti

What Is the Ash Ritual? The first thing you hear when you tell locals that you’re planning to visit the Mahakaleshwar temple is that you must attend the bhasm aarti. The bhasm aarti is the first ritual conducted everyday at the temple. It's performed to wake the god (Lord Shiva) up, do shringar (anoint and dress him for the day), and carry out the first offering of fire to him (by circulating lamps, incense, and other items). The unique thing about this aarti is the inclusion of bhasm, which is ash from funeral pyres, as one of the offerings. Mahakaleshwar is a name for Lord Shiva and means the god of Time or Death. This may be one of the reasons for the inclusion of the funeral ash. You will be assured that this aarti is something that you shouldn’t miss, and that until fresh ash is not brought in the aarti cannot start. Where to View the Bhasm Aarti The bhasm aarti commences shortly after the jal abhishek ritual. There are four halls outside the temple's inner sanctum from where the aarti can be observed, some of which have been newly constructed to accommodate more devotees. The differences are in their size and location. Allocation is based on availability when booking. Nandi Mandapam is the preferred hall to be in, as it's smaller (fits only 100 people) and closest to the temple's inner sanctum. The larger Ganpati Mandapam is situated beside Nandi Mandapam and is the next best option, with stairs to sit on for an uninterrupted view. It can fit 400 people. Kartikey Man...

Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple (Ujjain)

We were four persons all 70+ visiting Ujjain on 26-27 October 2022 for the darshan of Lord Shiva and witness the early morning Bhasmarti. On the evening of 26th we did darshan of the jyotirling. The crowd was tremendous but it was moving. After the evening darshan we saw the new corridor which displays beautiful sculptures and panels of mythological characters and stories from the hindu epics. The work of the "shilpkars" and" murtikars" who have crafted these statues and engravings is marvellous. We had Rs200/ tickets booked earlier so we reached the temple early morning at 3am on 27th. Big que but moving. Being senior citizens the volunteers helped but some push and thrust was required. We took position in the Nandi mandap right in front of the garbhagraha. The shringar of the lord started first with water followed by milk ghee honey etc. Then after cleaning the ling with cloth the decoration started. The two young pandits were master artists and slowly the formed a beautiful face on the ling. Then they put the jwellery and the flowers. Meanwhile several bowls of fruits, sweets etc. were put around the ling as prasad. After the decoration was over a huge sack was put on the ling covering it totally. The drums (nagadas), conches(shanks) and bells were playing. The bhasm aarti started and the main priest spread the bhasm on the sack and around. The bhasm was in a cloth ball (potli) and the whole garbha grah got covered in ash. The chanting and music was loud. It was a treat...

Take a Tour of Mahakal Lok in Ujjain

What to See in Mahakal Lok One of the most awe-inspiring sights in Ujjain is the Mahakal Lok. This ancient temple complex is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati, and it dates back to the 8th century. Here you can find some of the most sacred artifacts and monuments associated with Hinduism. At the heart of Mahakal Lok is the Lingam of Shiva, which is said to be made from divine bhasma. The temple also features a 3-meter tall Shivalinga, which is placed on a yoni or base representing female power. This sacred symbol marks the union between Shiva and Parvati and is also known as Mahakaleshwar. Every day, priests perform a special aarti ceremony that honors Lord Shiva and his consort. The ritual involves chanting mantras and offering flowers and incense to the gods. During the aarti, the priests light diyas or oil lamps that symbolize the flame of knowledge and inner light. Witnessing this ceremony is an incredible experience that will stay with you long after you leave Mahakal Lok. You’ll also want to take your time exploring the many sculptures and carvings found throughout the complex. In addition to sculptures of Shiva, there are depictions of other important figures such as Ganesha and Hanuman. It’s said that visiting these figures is important for spiritual growth. While in Ujjain, you should make time to visit the Kal Bhairav Temple, which was built by King Bhadresen I around 800 AD. This shrine has an idol of Kal Bhairav—the God of Time—and people come her...

Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple (Ujjain)

This is one of the best managed Jyothir linga temple in my opinion. Powerful energy. Few tips : 1. Pay ₹750 and buy Garva Griha darshan. Slot opens on previous day at 4 pm. Only 1030 tickets sold per day. First cum first serve, you can't choose the timing. This is 1000 times better than doing Shighra Darshan[20 feet away] by paying ₹250 or regular darshan [40 feet away]. 2. For the special darshan entry is from Mansarovar gate ( or gate 4), behind where we can deposit the phone. 3. Don't take flower/ sweets basket as nothing is allowed to be taken inside garva griha. Only few pieces of flowers or bilwa leaves you can carry. 4. After darshan don't forget to check out Surya mukhi Hanuman ji near the water tank, and other 4 shiva linga indide the temple premises. 5. Ignore the local vendors, who says flower basket is for ₹5 and then won't give you flowers unless you buy sweets o ₹50 - ₹150 from them. 6. Inside garbhagriha you can only wear dhoti. No shirts allowed, a mens angavastra would be ideal. Women of all ages need to wear sprees. 7. My darshan was done in 45 mins, with jalabhishekam. It was fantastic. 8. Buy the laddu prasad inside or adjacent to the temple gates. Cost ₹360 per kilo. Minimum is ₹40 packet for 200 gm. 9. Must do atleast once in a lifetime. Carry umbrella and socks for summer as the ground becomes extremely hot to walk. Check out the larger promenade inside with beautiful lighting and decorations..they are cleaning the lake and water is diverted to it fr...
