Bhagat Singh Koshyari resigns, President appoints Ramesh Bais as Maharashtra's new Guv

According to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation of Bhagat Singh Koshyari as the Governor of Maharashtra. The President has now appointed former Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais as the state's new Governor. CP Radhakrishnan will replace Bais as the Governor of Jharkhand, said Rashtrapati Bhavan. Koshyari steps down as Maharashtra Guv Earlier in January, Koshyari who sparked controversy over his remark on his remarks on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj expressed his desire to resign from his post saying that he had conveyed it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to Mumbai. “I can never forget the love and affection I have received from the people of Maharashtra during the last little more than 3 years. During the recent visit of the Hon'ble Prime Minister to Mumbai, I have conveyed to him my desire to be discharged of all political responsibilities and to spend the remainder of my life in reading, writing and other activities," Koshyari said in a press release by Raj Bhavan. In his December letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah amid the demand for his ouster for remark on the Maratha King, Koshyari stated that a small part of his speech was taken "out of context and made the subject of criticism". Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Maharashtra Ex

New Delhi: Bhagat Singh Koshyari, the former governor of Maharashtra, on Thursday, dodged questions about the lacerating criticism from the Supreme Court for ordering then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to prove his majority in the assembly amid a mutiny in his Shiv Sena party last June. The 80-year-old former BJP member and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) veteran, who served as Maharashtra governor from 2019 to this February, said he had great respect for the top court but did not think he had been punished by it after the Supreme Court ruled that he had acted illegally in the face-off. Speaking with NDTV, Mr Koshyari did not express any regret about his decision, which contributed to the collapse of the three-party Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Mr Thackeray and the formation of a new government by Eknath Shinde of the Shiv Sena faction, backed by the BJP. "I have resigned from the post of governor and I don't think they have given any punishment to the former governor," Mr Koshyari said. "Had (SC) given the sentence, I would have appealed." He said he had done what he felt was right at the time, and that it was the job of journalists and lawyers to discuss the Supreme Court's decision. "It is the job of media persons, analysts it is the job of lawyers to discuss it... Discuss the Supreme Court's decision," he said. "I have great respect for what the Supreme Court says. The Supreme Court has every right to comment, we respect that." When asked if he agreed ...

Timeline of Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari's remarks that triggered controversy

MUMBAI: Here is a look at Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari's statements that triggered controversy, leading to the announcement by Raj Bhavan on Monday that he wants to quit the post. Addressing a gathering in November last year, Koshyari said Chhatrapati Shivaji was an 'icon of olden times' and personalities like Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar to Nitin Gadkari were the modern icons of the state. "Shivaji is an icon of the old era; I am talking about the new era. You will find (icons) right here. From Dr Ambedkar to Nitin Gadkari, you will find them here," Koshyari had said. In July last year, Koshyari said Mumbai would not remain the financial capital of the country if Gujaratis and Marwaris were removed from the city. His remark drew criticism from several opposition parties, with former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray saying it is time to show him the famous Kolhapuri chappal. While inaugurating new buildings of the Mumbai University, the Maharashtra Governor had urged the varsity vice-chancellor to name the new international students' hostel after freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. During a programme in Aurangabad in March last year, Koshyari said Samarth Ramdas was the 'guru' of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. "Many maharajas and chakravartis (emperors) were born on this land. But who would have asked about Chandragupta had there not been Chanakya? Who would have asked about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had there not been Samarth (Ramdas)," said Koshya...
