‘Bimbisara’ review: Intriguing Kalyan Ram’s film that needed a tighter treatment

Bimbisara is not an ordinary period film. It seems as if debutant director Mallidi Vassishta built a theme park period narrative around an idea that is straight out of his childhood fantasy. What seems like a period time-travel film that puts on the guise of a masala hero-vehicle, acquires heft with Nandamuri Kalyan Ram’s presence. The film begins in the year 500 B.C when Bimbisara (Kalyan Ram) is the emperor of the Trigartala empire. A vile egomaniac, his violent antics have no limit. However, his ego trip ends when his banished twin brother Devadatta ambushes him and teleports him — through a magical mirror — to the present-day world. Bimbisara's arrival favours Subramanya Sastri (Vivan Bhatena) and godman Kethu (Ayyappa P Sharma), who have their eyes set on an Ayurveda book titled Dhanwanthari which is safely locked in Bimbisara's treasure vault, which only he can open. The film doesn’t shy away from dealing with magic and is not brimming with realism and logic. Unfortunately, the setting up of this world is uninspiring. Scene after scene keeps reestablishing Bimbisara’s might and viciousness, to the point that you begin to worry if the film will celebrate this anti-hero. The tacky set designs and visual effects also do not help. To add to the misery, we get an item number featuring Warina Hussain that once again sings the praise of Bimbisara’s might. In retrospect, these sequences actually do no justice to what good is to follow. Storyline: Bimbisara, a ruthless king f...

Telugu movie 'Bimbisara' to release in North with subtitles only

The release of dubbed versions are acknowledged as a major factor behind the recent successes of several pan-Indian movies from down South. But in an interesting move that goes against the trend, Telugu movie 'Bimbisara' produced by NTR Arts will be taking the subtitling route to outside markets. In the wake of RRR, KGF2 and Pushpa's super success, the lavishly-mounted fantasy action-drama, Bimbisara, is targeting a wide release on August 5, 2022. UFO Moviez, which recently distributed much loved '777 Charlie' and 'Rocketry', will release the Telugu film in North India with English subtitles. The spokesperson for UFO Moviez points out that during the Coronavirus-triggered pandemic, when people were locked in their homes for months together, they devoured content from across India and the world. "As a result, language is no longer a barrier and they are now open to watching content with subtitles. OTT has changed viewing habits and we are confident that a good film in any language will bring people to the theatre," he asserts, promising that Bimbisara which offers a larger-than-life, big screen experience will not disappoint. 'Bimbisara' stars Jr. NTR's brother Nandamuri Kalyan Ram in the title role of the Emperor of Magadh in the 5th century BC, along with Catherine Tresa, Samyuktha Menon and Warina Hussain. The film is produced by Nandamuri Kalyan Ram's home banner NTR Arts, which despite intense competition from other filmmakers, was able to put together this massive pro...

EXCLUSIVE: Bimbisara is both a hero and a villain: Kalyanram

Nandamuri Kalyanram awaits the theatrical release of 'Bimbisara' on August 5. In an exclusive chit-chat with IndiaGlitz, the '118' actor speaks about the movie, working with debutant director Vassishta, Jr NTR's reaction after watching the movie, Nandamuri Balakrishna, and more. Excerpts: My look was sketched by artists who were given inputs by the director. The sketch helped us figure out how thick the beard has to be, how the moustache should look like, etc. I started growing hair. The kohl ('Katuka' in Telugu) is my wife's idea. When I tried the costume for the first time, I didn't look the best way because I was a bit fatty at that time. For 45 days, I stopped trying looks until I became physically apt for the King's role. I have read that Bimbisara had more than 500 wives. But I didn't learn much about him for the reason that our movie is a fictional story through and through. It has nothing to do with Bimbisara, the historical figure. In the film, Bimbisara is both a hero and a villain. And even the climax doesn't say what exactly he is. For that, you will have to wait for the second part. No man is completely non-violent. Bimbisara, the character, reflects human complexity. Tarak recently watched the movie and he was excited. He told me the feel of the drama is incredible. Balayya garu is yet to watch the movie. I am going to screen it soon. He watches all our movies for sure. Right from childhood, I haven't ever taken freedom with him because I am sort of intimidat...
