What’s it about? Bimbisara (Kalyan Ram) is the ruler of Trigartala empire. Cruel by nature and avaricious, Bimbisara goes to any length to achieve what he wants. If anyone comes in his path, he will not hesitate to eliminate them. Not realizing the powers of Mayadarpini (Magical mirror), he touches it and he time travels to 2022. How can he get back to his time? The rest of the story is about how Bimbisara gets his redemption. Analysis Mounted on a lavish scale, ‘Bimbisara’, directed by debutant Vassisht, is all about time travel. It is a fantasy drama. The tropes of the genre of time travel are all there but the new director has twisted them. The protagonist is not a good person. He is evil. Such an evil person transporting to a new era to come to a realization and get penance is a bit unique point for a commercial Telugu movie. Vassisht has chosen a huge canvas for the story. With able support from senior cinematographer Chota K Naidu, an uncompromising producer, and the VFX team, the new director has made the film look grandeur. A ruthless king Bimbisara gets rid of his opponents, including his own twin brother Devadatta to rule the Trigartala Kingdom. He doesn't stop even if he has to kill children. He's a despot, but he also leaves you in awe with the sheer power he commands. One day Devadatta reemerges and dethrones Bimbisara and sends him through a magical portal into the modern world. This despot now must adjust and learn to be human in today's Hyderabad, while also protecting his descendants. The anti-hero finally becomes the hero Trigaratala and his descendants need. The biggest reason this film feels like a let down probably has nothing to do with Vasishta and his vision. Because if told like a folk tale and narrated by a storyteller, this story would have been powerful as it has all the makings of a masala film. But the production values never match the director's vision. The CGI is too tacky. The sets are awkwardly constructed. There's a scene involving a hidden treasure that once belonged to an emperor. So nearly two thousand years later when his modern descendants rediscover the spot, the film wants to show that the place is now covered in moss, weeds and grass. But the sets are so badly staged that the moss looks like blotches of green paint often found after a paintball fight, and the grass and weeds look like rejected set décor from a school play. In an exclusive chit-chat with IndiaGlitz, the '118' actor speaks about the movie, working with debutant director Vassishta, Jr NTR's reaction after watching the movie, Nandamuri Balakrishna, and more. Excerpts: My look was sketched by artists who were given inputs by the director. The sketch helped us figure out how thick the beard has to be, how the moustache should look like, etc. I started growing hair. The kohl ('Katuka' in Telugu) is my wife's idea. When I tried the costume for the first time, I didn't look the best way because I was a bit fatty at that time. For 45 days, I stopped trying looks until I became physically apt for the King's role. I have read that Bimbisara had more than 500 wives. But I didn't learn much about him for the reason that our movie is a fictional story through and through. It has nothing to do with Bimbisara, the historical figure. In the film, Bimbisara is both a hero and a villain. And even the climax doesn't say what exactly he is. For that, you will have to wait for the second part. No man is completely non-violent. Bimbisara, the character, reflects human complexity. Tarak recently watched the movie and he was excited.
