Jharkhand on alert as bird flu cases reported in State

The Jharkhand government is on alert after bird flu cases were reported in a government-run poultry farm in Bokaro district, official said on Tuesday. The presence of H5N1 variant was confirmed among a protein-rich breed of chicken, popularly known as 'Kadaknath', at the farm in Lohanchal, they said. "Kadaknath chickens died due to bird flu in Government Poultry Farm located in Lohanchal, as per report received from the laboratory...Areas within one km radius has been declared as affected zone and areas within 10 km radius declared as surveillance zone. "Sale of chicken/duck etc will be banned in these areas," an official statement issued by Bokaro district administration said. Additional Chief Secretary, Health, Arun Kumar Singh told PTI that the state was on alert. According to Bokaro Deputy Commissioner Kuldeep Chowdhary, a medical team has been constituted to keep vigil on the border areas of the district and sampling of chickens/ducks of large poultry farms. Besides, the medical team has been asked to collect samples of people living in the infected zone, while a separate ward has been set up at Sadar Hospital for the treatment of anyone infected with bird flu. The administration has urged people to refrain from eating chicken/duck for a few days. Symptoms of the infection in humans include severe upper back pain, fever, cough, shortness of breath, cold and blood in the sputum, it said.

Even as an outbreak of bird flu was confirmed in Jharkhand capital city Ranchi, the State Health Minister Banna Gupta made a bizarre remark stating that he "eats more chicken when bird flu infection spreads." The Minister further said, "A few cases have been detected there is no serious concern as of yet. Our department (Health) is closely working with the Department of Animal Husbandry, and we will make sure that no one suffers by it," Mr. Gupta said while interacting with the reporters here on Saturday. "There is nothing to panic, I eat more chicken when bird flu infection spreads, all you need to do is heat it well while cooking, "Samples from the said epicentre (Jail More, Ranchi Municipal Corporation) were sent to the ICAR-National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) Bhopal which confirmed that samples are found positive for H5N1 avian influenza. Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy has directed the Jharkhand government to take immediate measures including a declaration of infected and surveillance areas, restricting access to infected premises, destruction of birds and disposal of dead birds and infected material. The Jharkhand government is on alert after bird flu cases were reported in a government-run poultry farm in Bokaro district, officials said on Tuesday. The death of the chickens prompted the district animal husbandry department to raise an alert. The people from the animal husbandry department and poultry sector have become active, many teams are investigating the matter. Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Bokaro, Kuldeep Chowdhary has advised people to refrain from eating chicken by holding a meeting. Ranchi, Jharkhand: The process to cull nearly 4,000 birds, including chickens and ducks, began in Jharkhand's Bokaro district late on Saturday evening after a bird flu outbreak was reported at a state-run poultry farm, an official said. H5N1, a type of avian influenza virus, was confirmed among a protein-rich breed of chicken, 'Kadaknath', at the farm in the Lohanchal where 800 birds died and 103 had to be culled, he said. "The process to cull a total of 3,856 birds, including chickens and ducks, began late this evening in the affected area -- 1 km radius of the farm," Institute of Animal Health & Production, Ranchi, director Dr Bipin Bihari Mahtha told PTI. He said the culling will continue on Sunday as the process is time-consuming. After birds started to die at the farm on February 2, samples were sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal for testing and the flu was confirmed, he said. A process has been started to determine the compensation for the people whose chickens and ducks are being culled, he added. Confirmed cases of bird flu at a state-run poultry farm in Bokaro has forced the Jharkhand government to put all such facilities on high alert and issue directions to set up control rooms in all 24 districts to monitor the situation, officials said on Wednesday. (Raj K Raj/HT File Photo) State animal husbandry director Chandan Kumar said prescribed SOPs laid down by the central government have been put in place after the Bhopal-based National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAN) confirmed avian influenza (H5N1), popularly known as bird flu, in the samples sent from the poultry farm. “Around 70-80% of the 1,000-odd chickens died over the past week, while the rest will be culled following the confirmation from Bhopal,” Kumar said. While orders have been issued to all districts to set up control rooms to trace any possible outbreak, cases till now have been reported only from the aforementioned poultry farm. Also Read: “The department will be conducting random sampling within a 10-km radius in Bokaro to check any possible spread. We are also doing contact tracing to get to the source of the outbreak,” he added. The sale of chicken in such areas in Bokaro will be banned till further orders.
