‘Modi for India, Shinde for Maharashtra’: Full Page Print Ad by Shiv Sena Irks State BJP Unit

Is all not well between the Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance in Maharashtra? There’s one more reason why the speculation is buzzing the state’s political circles. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena on Tuesday placed a full-page advertisement in several leading newspapers in Maharashtra titled ‘Modi for India, Shinde for Maharashtra’. The ad quotes a survey where Shinde is shown as preferred for the top post over BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis, who was the former Chief Minister and is the current deputy Chief Minister. ALSO READ | The advertisement carries Sena’s bow and arrow symbol and images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and CM Shinde. It has no image or photo of Shiv Sena founder the late Bal Thackeray. One portion of the ad reads: “According to the survey done for the Chief Minister’s position, 26.1% of the people in Maharashtra desire Eknath Shinde and 23.2% of the people wish to see Devendra Fadnavis as the next Chief Minister.” The ad further states: “It is undeniable proof that 49.3% of the people in Maharashtra wish to see a strong alliance between BJP and Shiv Sena for their state’s leadership.” The figures and claims in the advertisement have been attributed to a Zee TV-Matrize survey. Raut claimed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had asked Shinde to drop six key ministers of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena citing non-performance and controversy as reasons. In a recent meeting with Amit Shah, Shinde was asked to improve his government's performance following a series of negative public opinions on the incumbent government. With speculation over a possible cabinet expansion — the BJP trying to induct six more MLAs as ministers, while Shinde is expected to induct four more from his camp. It is being discussed that meetings of senior BJP leaders have also been held in Delhi for this purpose. At the same time, it is coming to light that the BJP leaders in Delhi are unhappy with the work of a few ministers of the Shinde group in the current cabinet. "BJP wants to improve its tally in the Maharashtra Cabinet so that they can have the upper hand in decision-making,” said sources requesting anonymity. While the BJP emerged as the single-largest party, the Maha Vikas Aghadi of Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena), NCP, and Congress overtook the BJP-Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena) in numbers. As many as 1,165 gram panchayats in 18 districts across Maharashtra went to polls on Sunday. Voters in the gram panchayats in Thane, Palghar, Nandurbar, Nashik, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, Bhandara, Gondia, Amravati, Gadchiroli, Nagpur, Washim, Wardha, and Chandrapur cast their vote. The polls witnessed a 75% turnout. Candidates in 115 gram panchayats were elected unopposed. Results of the remaining 1,050 gram panchayat seats were declared late on Monday evening. The polls were also significant as they were taking place close on the heels of the two groups of Shivsena getting new names. Although, the party symbol is not used for the elections, both the MVA and NDA claimed victory. As per the available numbers and claims made by parties the MVA won 457 gram panchayat seats. The NCP was the highest gainer with 155 seats, while the Uddhav faction or the Shiv Sena (UBT) got 153 seats and the Congress won 149 gram panchayats. On March 29, the Supreme Court called the government of Maharashtra “impotent” and “powerless” for its inability to curb the love jehad rallies that are increasing across the State. Hearing a contempt petition, the court said that the action of the government against hate speeches amounted to “tokenism”. “Hate is a vicious cycle and the State will have to initiate action,” said the bench consisting of Justices K.M. Joseph and B.V. Nagarathna. “The moment politics and religion are segregated, all this will stop,” they added. In response to the court’s rap, the Mumbai Police charged Raja Singh with hate speech under IPC 153-A(1)(a). Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole, ahead of a two-day review meeting of his party of the state's 48 Lok Sabha seats said that the seat sharing talks in the Maha Vikas Aghadi will be smooth since the primary aim was to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reported the PTI. ADVERTISEMENT The Maha Vikas Aghadi comprises the Shiv Sena (UBT) of Uddhav Thackeray, the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress.
