Mythology remains top pick at Indore book fair

Displacing mystery genre from top spot, mythology is what has become the favourite of book lovers of Indore. According to the organizers, in the first two days of the fair, around 10 per cent of the books sold in the fair were of mythological genre, followed by mystery novels. The non-fiction category came third, which mainly included biographies and autobiographies. “Out of around 5000 books that have been sold in the first two days, around 600 are books based on mythology. Scion of Ikshvaku the trilogy based on Lord Ram, Kavita Kane’s books Sita’s sister and Karna’s wife are being picked up the most,” organizer of the fair Rajkumar Shukla said. According to librarians of the city, the trend is also visible among school students who are picking up these books. “In my school, students of Classes 10, 11 and 12 have been borrowing these books increasingly. I have also read some of them looking at their demand,” Manju Gupta, librarian at a city-based school said. The reason for this shifting trend was explored by some of the authors and readers who felt that these modern books looked at the life of Gods in a scientific way.
