Common Eastern Bumble Bee

Description The first reaction most people have when they see a bumble bee is fear. It's painful and unpleasant to get stung by a bee, and some people have allergic reactions to the sting. But the next time you see a bumble bee, remember that although they sting, bumble bees are one of the most beneficial animals in nature, and they make our lives better every day. The common eastern bumble bee is a pollinator of flowers and numerous fruit and vegetable crops, including tomatoes, blueberries, and cucumbers. Bumble bees have fur all over their bodies; these hairs collect and trap pollen, which the bees carry from one bloom to another. The common eastern bumble bee has black hairs on its head, abdomen, and legs. The center of its body, between the first two sets of legs, is called the thorax. On the common eastern bumble bee, the thorax is yellow. Range The common eastern bumble bee can be found throughout the east coast from Maine to Florida and west through Ohio. It's often seen flying through the air in spring and summer near gardens, farms, and backyards. Their nests are located in woodlands and fields. Bumble bees are important food sources for other wildlife. Diet Bumble bees are pollinators, animals that move from plant to plant while searching for protein-rich pollen or high-energy nectar to eat. As they go, they are dusted by pollen and move it to the next flower, fertilizing the plant and allowing it to reproduce and form seeds, berries, fruits, and other plant foo...

Bumble Bees

Bumblebees are large, hairy bees and are close relatives of the well-known honeybee. Most species of bumblebee live in colonies, but their colonies are much smaller than the Bumble Bee Characteristics We can recognise Bumble Bees from their very loud buzzing. They can be seen bobbing around flowers and are a good indication that spring is here. Bumblebees are usually a very distinctive black and yellow color, although they can be red and black or orange and black. Another obvious (but not unique) characteristic is the soft nature of the long, branched setae, called pile, that covers their entire body, making them appear and feel fuzzy. The female worker bumblebee has a stinger and is capable of stinging although they are never too willing to sting. A male bumblebee has no stinger and therefore cannot sting. A bumblebee does not have ears, and it is not known whether or how a bumblebee can hear sound waves passing through the air, however they can feel the vibrations of sounds through wood and other materials. The heart, like that in most other insects, runs down the entire length of the body. Their fat body is a nutritional store. Before hibernation, queens eat as much as they can to enlarge their fat body. The fat in the cells is used up during hibernation. You can take a bumblebee in your hand and as long as you do not treat it roughly, it will not sting you at all. However, if you see a bumblebee lying on its back, then it is best not to touch it. This position is a def...
