balkrishna doshi: remembering the indian visionary Over the past seven decades, Balkrishna Doshi was born in 1927 in Pune, India. Growing up, he was close to following in his family’s footsteps as furniture makers, but his interest in architecture eventually alchemized into a passion. In 1947, he graduated from the JJ School of Architecture in Bombay and worked withLe Corbusierfor four years as a senior designer in Paris (1951-54) and four more years in India to supervise projects in Ahmedabad. He then worked withLouis Kahnas an associate to build the Indian Institute of Management in that very same city, and they continued to collaborate for over a decade. Doshi eventually established his own practice,Vastu-Shilpa, in 1956, alongside two architects. Now known as Vastushilpa Consultants, the multi-disciplinary practice has evolved to five partners spanning three generations and sixty employees, with a portfolio of over 100 built projects — each having influenced the architectural landscape of India and its adjacent regions. Doshi ultimately settled with his wife Kamala in Ahmedabad, building their house in 1963 and later on his studio, Sangath, in 1981. Architect, urban planner and historian Suha Özkan first heard of BV Doshi in the late 1960s, when he was a student of architecture. But it was 20-odd years later, when Doshi was serving as a member of the jury for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, that Özkan finally got to know what lies at the heart of his work. This note takes the form of Aranya Low Cost Housing. In the year 1962, when I was enrolled in the Faculty of Architecture, at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, Turkey, the School of Architecture in Ahmedabad was founded by The Institute of Indology was designed by BV Doshi in 1962 to house ancient manuscripts, a research centre and eventually, a museum in Ahmedabad A very moving and symbolic aspect of CEPT is the absence of doors. • In June 2022, BV or Balkrishna Vithaldas won the gold medal awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects. The award is given to a person who has had a significant influence either directly or indirectly on the advancement of architecture. They described his work as combining "pioneering modernism with vernacular, informed by a deep appreciation of the traditions of India's architecture, climate, local culture and craft". • Born in 1927 in Pune, Doshi worked with architecture legends like Le Corbusier. He also worked with Louis Kahn as an associate to build the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and many other acclaimed projects reported by PTI. • Some of Doshi's projects include the Institute of Indology, CEPT University and Kanoria Centre for Arts in Ahmedabad, the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, and Aranya Low-Cost Housing, a township for low- to middle-income families, in Indore which won the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1995. • In 2018, he received the Pritzker Architecture Prize, considered one of the most prestigious prizes in the field of architecture, becoming the first Indian architect to receive the honour. • BV Doshi was conferred upon the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour in India, in 2020.
