By Pratiba Raman, T S Sudhir: The government has announced centralised helpline. It is called @srinivasiyc,'' tweeted author and human rights activist Aakar Patel this week. Admittedly, Patel is a strident critic of the BJP government. But here he was cheekily giving expression to how BV Srinivas, the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) chief has become the most visible help provider - government or non-government - during this Covid nightmare. Such is the trust factor that for so many seeking help for their near and dear ones, an SOS to @SrinivasIYC now means help is assured. Who is BV Srinivas? Cricket's loss, India's gain. Srinivas played for Karnataka as a wicketkeeper-batsman at the under-16 and under-19 level till 2003 when a ball hit him in the eye and he had to be operated upon. Recovery took two years forcing him to retire hurt from the game. Interestingly, his innings till his injury had almost been MS Dhoni-esque given that he had given up an offer of a job in the Railways to pad up behind the stumps instead. A student of National College in Bengaluru, this boy from Shivamogga district then embraced the student politics pitch and joined the National Students Union of India (NSUI). He hit the headlines during a protest against Pramod Muthalik, a right-wing rabble-rouser from coastal Karnataka and caught the eye of the party's central leadership. Moving to the IYC, Srinivas became the national general secretary in 2014 and its president last year. But that is not the way ...
