Boys lacrosse: Erie’s O’Brien named Times

When Erie lacrosse’s Charlie O’Brien was asked which was his favorite memory from the Tigers’ 2023 ride, he didn’t mention their run to the state title game or the incredible stats that ranked him No. 1 in Class 4A for points. No, the junior attacker picked out a moment that was sweet on a smaller scale, when his team played Thompson Valley at the start of the season. “Probably one of my favorite moments was assisting (freshman) Braylon Englehart for a goal,” O’Brien said. “I love that kid so much. That was his first goal.” That’s just the kind of leader he is. One that always puts the team first. Since O’Brien first stepped foot on the Erie High School lacrosse field, he’s made an immeasurable impact on the Tigers’ program, though the metrics that can be measured undoubtedly rank him among the best 4A players in the state. His 109 points — 66 goals and 43 assists — helped paved the way for the Tigers’ run to the state championship game, where they lost 10-9 to Cheyenne Mountain in double overtime. For that, and the leadership role he’s taken on within Erie’s program, O’Brien was named the Longmont Times-Call player of the year. (Boys) can do a lot more than we can (in their sport). I don’t know, it’s just really frustrating.” High school boys and girls lacrosse teams share many common rules and guidelines as set by the National Federation of State High School Associations. There are, of course, some differences in the two sports nationwide. But the most noticeable difference is that girls — unlike the boys — are prohibited from checking opposing players, both in Maine and nationwide. Boys lacrosse players are outfitted in helmets, gloves, arm pads and shoulder pads to help them absorb contact. Girls players, by contrast, wear just protective eye goggles and mouth guards since physical hits are prohibited. Some players and coaches from around Maine say they’d like to see changes to the girls game, although long-standing rules in state and across the country make that highly unlikely. “I love lacrosse, but I think girls are more tough than people think,” Lawrence senior Madison Chamberlain said. “I think I can take a couple hits.” Added Kennebunk senior Ruby Sliwkowski: “I would 100% like to see more physical...

No closures for Boulder Creek expected after boy drowns – Longmont Times

The Boulder Sheriff’s Office will not be instating closures to Boulder Creek at this time in the wake of the drowning of a 9-year-old boy on Sunday. At 4:52 p.m. Sunday, dispatchers received a report that a child had fallen out of his tube in Boulder Creek and was missing, according to a release issued by Boulder police. At approximately 5 p.m., first responders saw the child and pulled him from the creek near Broadway and Canyon Boulevard. CPR was administered before transporting the boy to Boulder Community Health’s Foothills Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:41 p.m. According to Carrie Haverfield, spokesperson for the Boulder Sheriff’s Office, the department’s policy regarding Boulder Creek is to only enact a tubing restriction when water levels have a sustained cubic feet per second level of 700 or above. “We look for sustained numbers, as typically you see fluctuations after rainstorms or in the overnight hours during spring run-off as the CFS numbers increase and decrease. We are constantly monitoring the water levels and will enact restrictions if we meet our pre-established threshold,” Haverfield said in an email. At 8 a.m. Thursday, Boulder Sheriff Curtis Johnson instated a closure of the North St. Vrain Creek and St. Vrain River to tubing and single chamber flotation devices in the interest of public safety after consulting with the Town of Lyons and the Lyons Fire Protection District. According to a Additionally, the Longmont Parks and Natural Resources...
