Cameroon Maps & Facts

• • • • • Cameroon is a Central African country covering an area of 475,442 sq. km. Cameroon is sometimes called "Africa in miniature" as it features a variety of geographical regions like mountains, desert, savanna, rainforest, and coastal plains. The physical map above illustrates the country of Cameroon, from the low and marshy coastal area in the south to shores of Lake Chad in the extreme north. The densely forested coastal plain of the country stretching inland from the Gulf of Guinea is around 20 to 80 km wide. From there the elevation of the land rises to around 500 to 600 m in the central Mbang Mountains. The region is covered by dense tropical rainforest. To the north of Benoue National Park, the land slopes into a savanna plain that extends to the shores of Lake Chad. In the far southwest, on the edge of the Gulf of Guinea, Cameroon is mountainous. As marked on the map, this region has the active volcano of Mt Cameroon, which at 4,070m is the highest point in West Africa. Significant rivers include the Dja, Nyong, and Sanaga. Cameroon's lowest point is the Atlantic Ocean (0 m). Regions of Cameroon Map Cameroon is divided into 10 semi-autonomous regions that are subdivided into 58 divisions. These divisions are then divided into arrondissements and finally districts. The 10 regions of Cameroon in alphabetical order are as follows: Adamaoua, Centre, East (Est), Far North (Extreme-Nord), Littoral, North (Nord), North-West (Nord-Ouest), West (Ouest), South (Sud), So...

Cameroon travel

• Africa The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise against all travel to the Bakassi Peninsula, and to within 40km of the borders with Chad and Nigeria's Adamawa state in Cameroon's North and Adamaoua provinces. All but essential travel is warned against to the rest of the North and Adamaoua provinces. Cameroon is Africa's throbbing heart, a sultry mosaic of active volcanoes, white-sand beaches, thick rainforest and magnificent parched landscapes broken up by the bizarre rock formations of the Sahel. With both Francophone and Anglophone regions, not to mention some 250 local languages, the country is a vast ethnic and linguistic jigsaw, yet one that, in contrast to so many of its neighbors, enjoys a great deal of stability.

All About Cameroon

Cameroon The Republic of Cameroon is a west African country bordered by Chad to the northeast, the Central African Republic to the east, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo to the south, and Nigeria to the west. The country’s coast, on the Bight of Bonny, is part of the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. Due to its geological and cultural diversity, it is called “Africa in miniature.” Cameroon has beaches, deserts, mountains, savannas, and rainforests. Mount Cameroon is the highest point. Douala, Yaounde, and Garoua are the largest cities. The country has 200 different languages. Native music includes makossa and bikutsi, among others. Cameroon’s football team is also successful. Official languages are English and French. The Sao civilizations were early inhabitants around Lake Chad as were the Baka in the southeastern rainforest. Explorers from Portugal reached the area in the 15th century and named it Rio dos Camaroes, or the River of Shrimp. In the 19th century, Fulamo soldiers founded the Adamawa Emirate. Other groups founded chiefdoms as well. In 1884, the country became a German colony. The territory was divided between France and Britain after World War I as mandates by the League of Nations. The Union des Populations de Cameroun party pushed for independence until the French outlawed it in the 1950s. It fought the French and other forces until 1971. In 1960, part of Cameroon became independent as the Republic of Cameroon. Its president was A...

Titan of Cameroon's opposition politics John Fru Ndi dies at 81

YAOUNDE, June 13 (Reuters) - Veteran Cameroonian opposition leader John Fru Ndi, who for decades fought to topple long-standing president Paul Biya at the ballot box, has died aged 81, his party said. Fru Ndi, who dominated the opposition in the Central African country for a generation and was arrested and kidnapped for his politics, had been suffering from a long illness, the Social Democratic Front (SDF) said in a statement overnight. "It is with sadness that we announce the transition into eternal glory of John Fru Ndi on June 12, 2023, at 11:30 p.m.," it said. The African Union's Commission President Moussa Faki described him as a "national political leader" and sent his condolences to the country. "I salute the memory of a singular, charismatic and courageous leader," said current opposition leader Maurice Kamto. An English-speaking businessman from Cameroon's northwest region, Fru Ndi formed the SDF, the first opposition party in the bilingual Central African country, which is dominated by its French-speaking majority. He ran for president several times, including in 1992 when he narrowly lost Cameroon's first free presidential elections. Fru Ndi claimed the vote had been rigged and he was placed under house arrest as riots swept opposition strongholds. "The story of the return to multi-party politics in Cameroon cannot be written without his name in bold gold," said politician Akere Muna, who ran for president in 2018. Presidential candidate John Fru Ndi from the op...
