Smart City Diu

The territory of Daman and Diu lying on the Arabian Sea coast was a Portuguese Colony for about 450 years, prior to its incorporation into the Indian Union on December 19, 1961. It was administered as a single Union Territory along with Goa until 1987. After Goa became a separate state, Daman and Diu became separate union territory. The Union Territory has two districts, Daman and Diu, separated by a distance of about 750 Km by road. Diu Island is a well known and famous tourist destination of India, both for inland and foreign tourists. It is situated slightly off the coast of Saurashtra (Kathiawad) near the port of Veraval in Gujarat with a coastal distance of 21 Km. It lies at a distance of about 768 Km from Daman, the Capital of the Union Territory of Daman & Diu. The Diu town is a joyous city, famous for its scenic beauty, wonderful sandy beaches and heritage structures has been selected by MoUD, GoI under Smart city Mission Phase I and it is one among 98 Smart cities. Now Diu is competing with other 98 cities across the country for the Smart City Challenge Phase 2. Diu is largely covered by sand, silt, and marsh. The union territory has warm summers and mild winters. The vast majority of the people are Hindus, and there are small minorities of Muslims and Christians. The principal language is Gujarati. Agriculture and fishing dominate the economy. The main crops of Daman include rice, millet, and pulses (legumes), while millet and wheat thrive in the drier climate of Diu. The towns of Daman and of Diu are the territory’s commercial centers. About Daman and Diu The second smallest union territory in India, Daman and Diu is located near Gujarat. Daman lies on the Gujarat coast while Diu is an islet in the southern fringe of Kathiawar peninsula. It is bounded on its north and south by Bhagwan and the Kalem Rivers respectively, on its east by the Gujarat state and on its west by the Arabian Sea.
