palli: Palli enters history as India's first 'carbon neutral panchayat', Prime Minister inaugurates 500 KV solar plant

Synopsis The prime minister said that Palli has shown the way to the country for achieving carbon neutral state. "People of Palli has helped in the project. They have also provided food to people engaged in the project," he said. In all 1,500 solar panels put up on the total area of 6,408 square metres will provide clean electricity to 340 houses in the model panchayat under the central government's 'Gram Urja Swaraj' programme, officials said. The project was completed at a cost of Rs 2.75 crore in a record time, officials said. The electricity generated will be distributed to the village, having a daily requirement of 2,000 units, through the local power grid station. The village, which has 450 houses, have been given solar 'Chulhas' (stoves) and all the houses will be covered by the next phase after the prime minister's visit, the officials said. Himachal set to become India’s 1st carbon

CHANDIGARH: Himachal Pradesh, which has mandated all government departments to begin environment audit, is on its way to becoming the country���s first and the world���s second carbon-free state. People of Himachal will be expected to undergo lifestyle changes, according to the environment master plan and ���Policy & Strategy on Climate Change & Harnessing Carbon Credits��� . Beginning with audits, the policy will focus on the functioning of all departments, especially those involved in development. ������ We must ensure that the technology used for projects like road cutting and tunnel digging is not harmful to flora and fauna. Technology must change as we have to ensure disposal of waste in an environment friendly manner,������ said Arun Sharma, secretary to chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. The plan entails a novel approach towards disposal of garbage by civic bodies and of muck by contractors involved in hydel projects or even those into development work like construction of bridges. The HP government will sign an MoU with the state of California. In fact, over the years, India is expected to earn $2.27 billion from selling certified emissions reduction to the US. Himachal has approached Nobel laureate R K Pachauri, chairman of Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change, who has shown interest in coming on board.
