What is a CASB Cloud Access Security Broker?

What is a CASB (cloud access security broker)? A cloud access security broker (CASB) is a security check point between cloud network users and cloud-based applications. They manage and enforce all data security policies and practices, including authentication, authorization, alerts and encryption. CASBs improve an organization’s visibility as to who is accessing their data and how it is being used across endpoints. A CASB protects the organization through a combination of prevention, monitoring and mitigation techniques. In addition to reviewing user activity, the CASB can warn administrators about likely malicious activity, block the installation of malware or other threats and detect potential compliance violations. The CASB may also review the organization’s firewall or proxy logs to better understand cloud application usage and identify anomalous behavior. A CASB solution is especially helpful given the proliferation of cloud-based services and the growing popularity of bring-your-own-device policies. Taken together, these two trends have greatly expanded the data environment, making it harder for the IT organization to oversee network use and ensure the protection of enterprise data. Because CASBs access personal devices, it is important that the solution observes modern privacy standards and inspects only corporate data. 2023 Cloud Risk Report Download this new report to learn about the most prevalent CASB vs CSPM vs CWPP The core elements of While CSPM and CWPP work...

In the modern work era, enterprises are responsible for increasingly complex security enforcements between users and cloud-based applications. Traditional binary security systems only block or allow access, and no longer serve a cloud-based enterprise contending with multiple locations and devices. A CASB allows an organization to take a nimble, flexible approach to security policy enforcement, providing tailored options for the contemporary workforce and balancing access with data security. Additionally, it provides real-time protection to sensitive data by using a DLP that utilizes the same ML algorithm. 2. What is a CASB or Cloud Access Security Broker?

In the old days, companies commonly stored and safeguarded all of their software and data in a single on-site data center. This made security challenges more straightforward to overcome. The companies had complete visibility over their devices and those who had access to their applications and sensitive data, meaning they had virtually complete control over everything and everyone entering and exiting their data centers. Now, decades after the rise of cloud computing, it’s a completely different story. As companies moved their apps, data access, and data storage to the cloud, new security gaps started to emerge. How to overcome the lack of visibility with cloud apps? How to compensate for incomplete control over who can access the data? What’s the best way of dealing with denial-of-service (DoS) attacks? How to stop the hijacking of user accounts? What about human error and insider misuse? And the list of cloud security vulnerabilities goes on and on. These newly created security gaps had to be filled with some sort of cloud-based and cloud-delivered security solution which is specially designed with software-as-a-service (SaaS) apps in mind. This solution should add a new layer of security to make sure all activities across public and custom clouds are kept under a watchful eye and in complete control. One solution that can serve this purpose is Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) and we need to talk about it. TechRadar needs yo... Share your thoughts on Cybersecurity and...
