Caterpillar Rash: How to Spot and Treat It – Cleveland Clinic

Q: You picked up a caterpillar on a hike and now your arm is an itchy patchwork of red bumps. Is that normal? A: Don’t be fooled by the cuteness of a fuzzy caterpillar inching through the world in its adorable way. Some of those little critters pack a nasty punch that can leave your skin red, swollen and itchy. Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services. The reason? It’s those tufts of bristly hair that make caterpillars look like a living stuffed animal — ironically, the whole reason why you picked the creature up in the first place. The spike-like hairs in a few dozen caterpillar species are actually quills connected to poisonous sacs. Touch these hairs and they may break off in your skin, releasing a tiny dose of toxin in the process. It’s basically a defense mechanism the caterpillar deploys to avoid being… well, manhandled by much larger creatures. (In this case, you.) Symptoms of a caterpillar sting Now the good news: Reactions to caterpillar stings usually stay on the mild side. The sad truth is, once your monarch larvae are sick, it’s usually too late to save them… The explosion of comments and questions I receive about monarch diseases suggests they’re a common problem for many raisers. There’s still a lot of work to be done to help everyone raise butterflies with (at least) a 90% survival rate. In the past few seasons, I’ve raised hundreds of butterflies from tiny monarch egg. The only casualties I’ve experienced are from carelessness (rushing cage cleaning), and accidentally bringing in monarch predators with milkweed…mainly small spiders. Monarch disease and death do not have to be a regular part of your raising experience. My goal is to bring you an awe-inspiring and joyful raising experience free of monarch diseases and death….or at least bring loss down to a tolerable level, so you can experience the joys of raising,...

What are these hairy caterpillars?

• Remove the caterpillar from the skin without using bare hands. • Gently put any kind of tape over the exposed area with the sticky side facing the exposed skin. • Pull up the tape, removing any hairs or spines. • Repeat with fresh pieces of tape as often as needed to treat the exposed skin. • Wash the area gently with soap and water. • Apply an ice pack to reduce stinging sensation and apply a paste of baking soda and water to reduce itchiness. • If the rash does not go away, gets worse, or gets badly blistered, consider consulting with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and recommendations.

Treatment for a Rash Caused by a Caterpillar

This immune response occurs when the body sees a substance as a threat even if it's not. The immune system will flood the body with a chemical called histamine. Touching a caterpillar can trigger this release of histamine, causing redness, swelling, itching, rash, welts, and small, fluid-filled sacs called vesicles. There may also be a burning or stinging sensation. If a child touches their eyes or nose after handling a caterpillar or places one in their mouth, there could be a more serious reaction. This might include sneezing, coughing, runny nose, red eyes, shortness of breath, mouth pain, itching, and difficulty swallowing. If you notice any of these symptoms, go to your nearest urgent care center or emergency room. Sometimes a child can get a rash without actually putting their fingers on a caterpillar. The little tufts can become airborne and land on bare skin. Caterpillars can also leave setae behind on items kids commonly come in direct contact with, like trees or playground equipment. This is more likely when there are a lot of caterpillars in one area. Treatment If your child develops a rash after an encounter with a caterpillar, it usually won't be serious and can be treated at home. If the reaction is mild, you will first need to remove any of the tiny hairs that have rubbed off onto the skin. To do this, place a strip of tape on the area of skin with the hairs. The hairs will stick to the tape when you pull it off. This works the way a lint roller does (and yo...
