CDS General Anil Chauhan, a former Eastern Army Commander, took charge as the country's senior-most military commander over nine months after the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Bipin Rawat, died in a chopper crash in Tamil Nadu. "I will try to fulfil the expectations of the three services. We will tackle all challenges and difficulties together," said General Chauhan, who has been tasked with a mandate to implement the ambitious theaterisation plan that seeks to ensure tri-service synergy and prepare the military for future security challenges. The ongoing turmoil in Manipur is primarily an ethnic clash and is not related to counter-insurgency, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan said on Tuesday, three days after the state’s chief minister N Biren Singh said 40 Kuki “terrorists” were killed by forces and characterised the fresh violence as one between militants and security personnel, not between communities. Chauhan took over as the CDS on Friday. He is the first officer to have been made a four-0-star general after his retirement. "I am proud to be assuming the responsibility of the highest rank in the Indian Armed Forces. I will try to fulfill the expectations from the three services and tackle all challenges and difficulties together," he said after taking over as CDS. His last posting before retirement was as Eastern Army Commander. As CDS, he is expected to continue the foundation work done by his predecessor late General Bipin Rawat towards achieving the much-on-track tri-services integration, besides other initiatives such as modernization of armed forces on the lines of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and self-reliance in defence.

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, who was on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, chaired a high-level security meeting here, officials said on Friday. The meeting was attended by Udhampur-based northern Army commander Lt General Upendra Dwivedi and Director General of Police Dilbag Singh among others, they said.
