New quaternary A 2 MSn 3S 8 ( A ​= ​alkali metals; M ​= ​Zn, Cd) sulfides were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic methods. α-Cs 2ZnSn 3S 8( 1), α-Rb 2ZnSn 3S 8( 2) and α-Cs 2CdSn 3S 8( 3) have layered tetrahedral [ MSn 3S 8] 2- frameworks, in which Zn 2+, Cd 2+ and Sn 4+ MSn 3S 8] 2- framework of β-Cs 2ZnSn 3S 8( 4), β-Rb 2ZnSn 3S 8( 5), β-Cs 2CdSn 3S 8( 6) and β-Rb 2CdSn 3S 8( 7) compounds. The β-modifications undergo thermal transformation to α–modifications. K 2CdSn 3S 8( 8) and Na 2CdSn 3S 8( 9) have a new type of layered structure, in which Cd 2+ and Sn 4+ ions are octahedrally coordinated and disordered in [CdSn 3S 8] 2- framework. Their potassium and sodium ions undergo facile ion-exchange with mono-, di- and trivalent cations at 1– 9 corroborate their structural differences.
